Back in March, Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5<\/a>: the new version of its Deep Learning Super Sampling upscaling tech, tentatively slated for a fall 2026 release, which includes a generative AI upscaling mode that completely alters the way games look. The internet immediately recoiled in horror at the yassified AI slop filter, prompting Nvidia\u2019s CEO, Jensen Huang, to state that everyone was \u201ccompletely wrong\u201d about the tech<\/a> and that Capcom and Bethesda were on board with the \u201cartistic control\u201d that DLSS 5 offers.<\/p>\n

Last night, an unfinished version of DLSS 5 leaked online through NBA 2K27\u2019s early access build. As explained by VideoCardz<\/a>, the \u201cnvngx_dlssnr.dll\u201d library file was immediately identified as version 310.8.0.0 of NVIDIA DLSSNR, and it contained the unreleased runtime for DLSS 5 Neural Rendering.<\/p>\n

Roughly five hours later, the RenoDX modding community managed to get DLSS 5 working in Remedy Entertainment\u2019s Control<\/a>. If the point of the tech was to make Jesse Faden look like an old-aged pensioner, then mission accomplished.<\/p>\n

Modders have since released versions of the DLSS 5 filter mod to other games, including the likes of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim<\/a> and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Apparently modders have managed to enable DLSS 5 AI Neural Filters in Control, using a Neural Rendering DLL from NBA 2K27 early access. It seems to be limited to RTX 50 Series for now.

While the Skyrim example is more creepy than anything, as it gives all the characters this unnerving, dead-behind-the-eyes look, the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth screenshots<\/a> somehow transform Cloud into a version of Scarlett Johansson who has been leading the last remnants of humanity in a war against its AI overlords. And, according to VideoCardz\u2019s initial report, modders in the RenoDX Discord server have also stated that the unreleased version of DLSS 5 is absolutely tanking their machines, with one test leading to \u201calmost 50 percent performance loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

In light of that, however, as much as the internet is enjoying mocking Nvidia for how awful the DLSS 5 filter looks, it\u2019s important to reiterate that this is an unfinished, leaked build of the tech that modders are forcing into games before official DLSS 5 support has been implemented.<\/p>\n

That being said, DLSS 5 is still set to be released in Fall 2026, which could mean that the official release is less than a month away. If it is due to release that soon, it would explain why the DLSS 5 library file was included in NBA 2K27\u2019s early access, as the game is set to release worldwide on September 4.<\/p>\n
