The star defenceman officially inked an eight-year, $163.2-million contract to stay with the Avalanche for the long haul on Friday.

Makar’s new deal carries a $20.4-million average annual value, surpassing the $18.8-million AAV contract signed by San Jose Sharks star Macklin Celebrini earlier this summer as the largest in NHL history.

The 27-year-old undoubtedly has the resume to back such a significant signing. Through his first seven NHL seasons, Makar has four 20-goal campaigns, two Norris Trophies, a Conn Smythe and a Stanley Cup to his name.

However, the unprecedented value of the deal still arrived as a historic moment across the hockey world, as fans and analysts alike rushed to social media to react to Makar’s new standard.
