William Byron has clinched the NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season championship<\/a>, and Kevin Harvick had some interesting thoughts. On Kevin Harvick\u2019s Happy Hour<\/a>, Harvick reacted to Byron clinching the title with one race remaining in the regular season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look at it, William Byron has won two races. When I think of his season as a whole, it\u2019s been pretty up and down,\u201d Kevin Harvick said. \u201cBut I think they performed pretty well. I think Next Gen Racing, in general, is more inconsistent than what we\u2019ve been used to in the past. I think you\u2019re going to have more DNFs, you\u2019re going to have more off weeks, and how do you minimize those off weeks?<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I look at this list, I can\u2019t pick anybody out that\u2019s had a better regular season. \u2026I think that William Byron and Denny Hamlin have probably been he best two cars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harvick then pointed out one stat that separates William Byron from the rest of the field. \u201cHere\u2019s the thing that stands out to me with William Byron winning the regular season championship: he\u2019s got 241 stage points,\u201d he said. The driver with the second-most stage points is Ryan Blaney with 217, and Harvick said that when a driver has that many stage points, that means the driver is running up front consistently.<\/p>\n

Byron hit the ground running after winning the Daytona 500 to start the year. He didn\u2019t earn another victory until earlier this month when he won at Iowa. Byron has finished in the top 10 13 times<\/a>, he has earned nine top-five finishes and has 910 laps led, the most for any Cup Series driver. <\/p>\n

While speaking to reporters after the Richmond race this past weekend, Byron talked about winning the title after being 16 points down four weeks ago. \u201cI think just finally some things went our way. I think honestly, we\u2019ve been doing a really good job on strategy, execution. We\u2019ve brought good speed in August. I\u2019d say our speed was the best in mid to late June,\u201d Byron said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say in May, we were super fast. Then June, we were really fast. I crashed probably our best car at Pocono. Then July, we just had some really bad finishes, really bad things happened to us. Ran out of fuel a couple of times. I think we buckled down and really got back to the team we\u2019re capable of being. Pretty impressive, August probably.
