\n\tAndrew Garfield<\/a> is reflecting on his viral interview<\/a> from 2013 in which he questioned why there had not yet been a gay Spider-Man. The Oscar nominee was promoting \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man 2\u201d at the time when he told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> about a recent discussion he had with producer Matt Tolmach about gender-swapping Peter Parker\u2019s iconic love interest Mary-Jane, since she\u2019s also just known as MJ.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was kind of joking, but kind of\u00a0not\u00a0joking about MJ\u2026 I was like, \u2018What if MJ is a dude?\u2019\u201d Garfield said in 2013. \u201cWhy can\u2019t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It\u2019s hardly even groundbreaking! \u2026 So why\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0he be gay? Why\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0he be into boys?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGarfield even pitched having Michael J. Bordan join his \u201cAmazing Spider-Man\u201d franchise as a male MJ, adding: \u201cI\u2019ve been obsessed with him since\u00a0\u2018The Wire.\u2019\u00a0He\u2019s so charismatic and talented. It\u2019d be even better \u2014 we\u2019d have interracial bisexuality!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNow on his 2026 press tour for Paul Greengrass\u2019 \u201cThe Uprising,\u201d Garfield was asked by EW<\/a> to reflect on his 13-year-old call for a gay Spider-Man.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about,\u201d Garfield said. \u201cI just still believe that anyone can be in that suit. That\u2019s the point of why it\u2019s such a kind of universally beloved character, one of the greatly beloved characters in the history of fiction is because you don\u2019t see skin color, you don\u2019t see gender, you don\u2019t see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tGarfield continued, \u201cI like the idea of a place where everyone is being honored and everyone is being included, and it was just a kind of act of saying, \u2018Well, why not?\u2019 And you\u2019ll be telling on yourself if you have a strong opinion either way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTom Holland currently holds the title of Spider-Man on the big screen, with his latest outing, \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d breaking box office records this summer to become one of the top grossers in film history. The actor has already expressed interest in diversifying the role with the addition of a live-action Miles Morales.
