Lover of football, flirter with other sports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\/player\/_\/id\/3142242\/amy-okonkwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Amy Okonkwo<\/a> has joined Dallas Wings on a seven-day hardship contract, a move that sees the Nigeria forward achieve her ambition of playing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WNBA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The deal, which will see her play alongside <a data-player-guid=\"5d79683b-b6b8-3474-a96f-617daff9251e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/player\/_\/id\/4433730\/paige-bueckers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paige Bueckers<\/a>, comes weeks after Okonkwo starred as <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/espn\/story\/_\/id\/45905376\/chicago-sky-coach-rena-wakama-praises-my-queens-nigeria-afrobasket-win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nigeria won a fifth straight FIBA Women&#8217;s AfroBasket title<\/a>, in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>The 6-foot-2 forward won her second consecutive AfroBasket MVP award, and she spoke after the tournament about her desire to reach the WNBA after years of club success and with D&#8217;Tigress, Nigeria&#8217;s women&#8217;s national basketball team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I still have hopes for a WNBA opportunity,&#8221; she said at the post-final press conference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to play at the highest level, whenever possible. I have played EuroLeague, and this next year I will be playing EuroCup in Turkey. I&#8217;m just following where the game is taking me, trying to play at the highest level possible and playing the best that I can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That dream is coming to fruition even quicker than she could have anticipated when she spoke in Kigali.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Amy Okonkwo is a three-time AfroBasket champion and two-time Olympian for Nigeria.\u00a0DAMIEN MEYER\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Okonkwo joins a shorthanded Dallas team that has been eliminated from WNBA playoff contention, signing days after the Wings announced center <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\/player\/_\/id\/4336633\/li-yueru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Li Yueru<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/46023520\/wings-center-li-yueru-season-spraining-knee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">out for the season with an ACL sprain<\/a>, and that guard <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\/player\/_\/id\/3904577\/arike-ogunbowale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arike Ogunbowale<\/a> was out indefinitely with right knee tendinitis. Rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\/player\/_\/id\/4434015\/jj-quinerly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">JJ Quinerly<\/a> then left Dallas&#8217; loss to <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"fc3d2f98-2a3d-9ef8-4d5b-b8d5168d7737\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/team\/_\/name\/la\/los-angeles-sparks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Sparks<\/a> on Wednesday, departing in the fourth quarter after suffering a left leg injury.<\/p>\n<p>The contract brings Okonkwo full circle, returning her to the Dallas-Fort Worth area where she made her mark in college basketball.<\/p>\n<p>Okonkwo, who grew up in Fontana, California, played one season of college basketball with <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/30\/usc-trojans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">USC Trojans<\/a> before moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/2628\/tcu-horned-frogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TCU Horned Frogs<\/a> for three seasons, winning Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year honors in 2018. Now a three-time AfroBasket champion with Nigeria, the elite outside shooter and versatile forward is also a two-time Olympian having played at the 2020 Tokyo Games and 2024 Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>She joins the Wings after a strong season with Bourges in France, where she averaged 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting nearly 48% from three-point range. Earlier this year, she appeared in two WNBA preseason games on a training camp contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.espn.com\/wnba\/team\/_\/name\/con\/connecticut-sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Connecticut Sun<\/a>, averaging 7 points and 4 rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>The Wings are down to eight active players, and a team statement said she would be available for Friday&#8217;s game against Seattle Storm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Colin UdohAug 22, 2025, 01:27 AM CloseItinerant writer.
