Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown has revealed the names of companies that have inquired about the city\u2019s idle Stellantis assembly plant, offering a glimpse at what could become of the massive facility if the automaker decides to sell.<\/p>\n

Among those interested are Chinese automaker BYD, Stellantis\u2019 Chinese partner Leapmotor, an unnamed Italian automaker and two Canadian defence companies.<\/p>\n

The revelations come as the future of the Brampton Assembly Plant remains uncertain and Stellantis faces pressure to find a new use for a facility that has been sitting idle since December 2023.<\/p>\n

Brown disclosed the companies\u2019 interest in an interview reported by Bloomberg News on Monday.<\/p>\n

He said BYD approached him about six months ago to discuss the possibility of manufacturing buses at the Brampton plant.<\/p>\n

Brown also said the city has received inquiries from Leapmotor International, the joint venture between Stellantis and Chinese automaker Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, and an Italian automaker whose name he did not identify.<\/p>\n

The interest isn\u2019t limited to automakers.<\/p>\n

Brown said Canadian defence companies Roshel and Dominion Dynamics have also expressed interest in the facility. Brampton-based Roshel is interested in potentially building light-utility armoured vehicles, while Dominion Dynamics has discussed using the plant to manufacture drones.<\/p>\n

The mayor said companies that have looked at the facility have noted that some of the existing equipment could allow the plant to be converted for different types of manufacturing.<\/p>\n

That could open the door to a future for the site that looks very different from the one Stellantis originally envisioned.<\/p>\n

The plant was supposed to undergo a major retooling to produce the next-generation Jeep Compass, but that plan was eventually abandoned. Stellantis announced in 2025 that Compass production intended for Brampton would instead move to its facility in Illinois.<\/p>\n

More than 2,200 Unifor members have been on layoff since production ended. The union has been pressing Stellantis for a future production program while also opposing the potential sale of the facility.<\/p>\n

Unifor said in August that Stellantis had told the union it intended to begin discussions with another company about a potential sale of the Brampton plant. The union has not identified that company.<\/p>\n

Stellantis has not confirmed a sale is underway.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur focus remains on finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for Brampton Assembly,\u201d company spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin said previously.<\/p>\n

The latest revelations come as Stellantis and Unifor prepare to begin contract negotiations Tuesday, Sept. 1, with the current agreement expiring Sept. 20.<\/p>\n

The future of the Brampton plant is expected to be one of the major issues at the bargaining table.<\/p>\n

For workers, the question is whether Stellantis will find another vehicle program for the plant or whether another company could ultimately put the facility back into production.<\/p>\n

For Brampton, the list of interested companies demonstrates that the massive site could have a future even if Stellantis no longer operates it.<\/p>\n

BYD\u2019s interest would bring Chinese bus manufacturing into the discussion. Leapmotor could potentially bring electric vehicle production. The Italian automaker could offer another automotive possibility, while Roshel and Dominion Dynamics raise the prospect of the facility becoming part of Canada\u2019s growing defence manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n

Brown said he hopes any company that eventually takes over the facility will employ at least some of the workers who have spent decades building vehicles there.<\/p>\n

The Brampton plant has been part of the city\u2019s manufacturing landscape for more than four decades.<\/p>\n

It was once a major source of automotive jobs and supported a much larger network of suppliers and businesses.<\/p>\n

Now, the big question is no longer simply whether someone is interested. It is whether any of those inquiries will ultimately turn into a deal that deal will bring Brampton workers back through the plant\u2019s doors.<\/p>\n
