Road, rail upgrades at Surrey port aim to keep cargo moving at 2 terminals<\/p>\n

Work to upgrade rail and road connections in the Fraser Surrey area is now complete, allowing more efficient cargo flows through the growing port lands.<\/p>\n
On Fraser River, the Port of Vancouver facility is busy with grain and canola oil exports, containerized and project cargo.<\/p>\n
Bulk export volumes (liquid and dry) moved through the port have grown more than 80 per cent since 2021, while container traffic jumped more than 10 per cent in 2025, according to port officials.<\/p>\n
A \u201cgateway improvement project,\u201d planned by Vancouver Fraser Port Authority with industry and government partnerships, involved extending Timberland Road South to reduce rail crossings, upgrading several intersections and rail crossings and adding a new dedicated inbound lane for container trucks driving to the DP World Fraser Surrey terminal.<\/p>\n
Fraser Surrey Port Lands area is home to two major terminals \u2014 DP World Fraser Surrey and Fraser Grain Terminal \u2014 and multiple port and supply chain operators.<\/p>\n
Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada, says efficient road and rail connections \u201care essential to keeping cargo moving reliably through the Fraser Surrey terminal and across Canada\u2019s supply chains. These upgrades will reduce congestion, improve safety and enhance the flow of containerized and bulk cargo through the gateway, helping Canadian exporters reach global markets more efficiently while supporting the continued growth of trade through the Port of Vancouver.\u201d<\/p>\n
The new road alignment and rail upgrades were opened more than a year ago, in spring 2025, \u201cenabling improved cargo movement through the gateway, with the project fully completed by the end of 2025,\u201d says a Vancouver Fraser Port Authority news release. <\/p>\n
