Flooding may occur in low-lying areas and streams and rivers \u201ccould become dangerous\u201d on Wednesday and Thursday in Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and elsewhere in the Credit River watershed, conservation officials say.<\/p>\n

Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel\u2019s three municipalities and several other communities, issued a flood outlook statement late Wednesday morning, saying \u201csignificant rainfall\u201d expected across the region<\/a> over the next two days could produce dangerous situations near water bodies and other areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cSignificant rainfall is expected to begin today and continue into early Thursday with forecasted rainfall amounts in the range of 10-40 mm. Localized thunderstorms may produce an additional 25-50 mm with total rainfall amounts exceeding 85-90 mm in some locations,\u201d CVC said in its flood outlook statement, which was issued at around 11:30 a.m. and remains in effect through end of day on Thursday or until further notice.<\/p>\n

The statement was released by the conservation authority after Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Natural Resources issued a provincial flood watch for all communities within the Credit River watershed, CVC said.<\/p>\n

A flood outlook statement is issued as an early notice of the potential for flooding based on a forecast of heavy rain or other weather conditions.<\/p>\n

CVC said it will continue to closely monitor both the weather and water levels across the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile current stream elevations throughout the watershed are below bankfull, water levels are already elevated due to recent precipitation events,\u201d CVC officials said in the statement. \u201cThe forecasted rainfall combined with localized thunderstorms may result in further elevated water levels. Higher water levels will result in local streams and rivers becoming dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams. Furthermore, flooding may occur in low-lying areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Residents are advised to stay away from all watercourses and prioritize keeping children and pets away from those areas as well, the conservation authority added.<\/p>\n
