The use of campaign signs have been limited in Brampton.<\/p>\n
Brampton residents may have noticed something different about this year\u2019s municipal election.<\/p>\n
There are no campaign signs.<\/p>\n
At least not yet.<\/p>\n
While the 2026 municipal election campaign is officially underway, residents won\u2019t see the familiar lawn signs popping up until Oct. 2.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s because this is the first local election held under the city\u2019s updated election rules, which set a firm limit on when candidates can display their signs. This means that signs can only be displayed on lawns and boulevards for less than a month before the Oct. 29 election.<\/p>\n
The changes come in response to problems the city has faced in the past.<\/p>\n
In 2022, the bylaw enforcement officers confiscated a record $6,400 in illegal election signs and issued fines of more than $150,000.<\/p>\n
Officially, the new rules have been put into place to reduce the clutter and improve safety, according to the city.<\/p>\n
There are also rules on where the signs can go\u2026once they are allowed.<\/p>\n

They cannot be placed on public property or road allowances, vacant or undeveloped land, trees, fences, construction hoarding, building walls, utility or hydro poles, light standards and other infrastructure. They also cannot be placed in a way that obstructs visibility or creates a safety hazard.<\/p>\n
On residential properties, each registered residential unit can display one election sign for each candidate. Non-residential properties can display up to three signs.<\/p>\n
There are also size restrictions. Election signs on residential properties cannot exceed 2 square metres in area or 1.5 metres in height. On non-residential properties, the maximum height is 3.6 metres.<\/p>\n
Vehicle-mounted signs are permitted, but they too must meet certain size restrictions.<\/p>\n
Signs that don\u2019t meet the new standards can be confiscated and held. Candidates can retrieve the signs after 30 days but must pay fines. Signs that are not reclaimed will be destoyed.<\/p>\n
The city hopes the tougher rules will help it avoid the problems in the past when, as one councillor noted, \u201cthe situation was out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n
