What Stats Were Used to Evaluate New Playcallers?<\/p>\n
How a new offensive coordinator or head coach will utilize his players is not 100% predictable, of course, but past trends can at least tell you what an offense is likely to look like.<\/p>\n
I dug into offensive plays per game, percentage of snaps a team spent in 11-personnel, and run-to-pass ratio, all available at Radar360<\/a>. By looking at where a team was last year compared to what the new playcaller did in his last season calling plays, I was able to find offenses that might look quite a bit different in 2026.<\/p>\n This isn\u2019t to say they were effective, or will be effective, in their new homes. It simply gives us a baseline on what to expect.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s a look at the 17 new playcallers and how they compare to their new team\u2019s old pace of play.<\/p>\n Expect Steelers and Ravens to Open Up Offenses<\/p>\n Baltimore and Pittsburgh have one of the league\u2019s best rivalries, and for more than a decade it was defined by two of the league\u2019s longest tenured and most successful head coaches, John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin.<\/p>\n Now, both are gone, and both teams are expected to have a very different offensive identity.<\/p>\n The Steelers went with Mike McCarthy to replace Tomlin, a head coach who calls his own plays. He was most recently in Dallas, but also spent time in Green Bay with current Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.<\/p>\n McCarthy ran one of the faster-paced offenses in the league while with Dallas, averaging 64.9 plays per game in 2024. That\u2019s a big step up from the 58.1 Pittsburgh ran this past season.<\/p>\n Three-receiver sets are also going to be much more common in Pittsburgh with McCarthy at the helm, as 70% of his plays in Dallas came out of some form of 11 personnel. A year ago, Pittsburgh was in 11 on just 48% of snaps.<\/p>\n Michael Pittman Jr., who joined from Indianapolis, and second-year slot Roman Wilson figure to be the biggest benefactors in this more spread out system.<\/p>\n Baltimore, meanwhile, went with a defensive-minded head coach in former Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. He tapped Declan Doyle to run his offense, which is a bit of a wild card.<\/p>\n Doyle was the offensive coordinator in Chicago this past season, but Ben Johnson designs and calls that offense. That being said, you don\u2019t hire from the Ben Johnson tree without hoping you get a very similar offense, right?<\/p>\n If Doyle follows the path of his mentor, the Ravens figure to look a lot different on offense this season. The Bears ran 64.9 plays per game a year ago, compared to 57.3 for Baltimore. The Ravens lined up in 11 personnel on just 29% of their plays last year under Todd Monken, so while Johnson (and likely Doyle) aren\u2019t running excessive three-wide formations, the 52% clip the Bears were in 11 personnel would be a big jump in Baltimore.<\/p>\n Zay Flowers just signed a massive new contract to be the No. 1 guy in Baltimore, but look for Rashod Bateman\u2019s role to increase and rookie Ja\u2019Kobi Lane to get a good amount of time on the field.<\/p>\n Cardinals, Jets Hope New Offense Brings Turnaround<\/p>\n In a lot of instances, new playcallers are in place because the team was bad the year before.<\/p>\n The Raiders, Titans, Cardinals, Browns, Jets and Giants were among the league\u2019s worst teams last year, so it\u2019s no surprise that all have a new coach calling plays in 2026.<\/p>\n Frank Reich is the new offensive coordinator for the Jets, taking over playcalling for the first time since 2023 when he was coaching the Panthers. He ran 11 personnel on 87% of snaps in Carolina, which is a step up from the already high 66% of snaps the Jets were in it in 2025.<\/p>\n The biggest difference, however, is pace. The Jets ran 59.4 plays per game in 2025, below the league average, while Reich\u2019s last year in Carolina saw his team run 64.5 plays per game.<\/p>\n Mike LaFleur is the new head coach in Arizona, and is expected to call his own plays, something he hasn\u2019t done since 2022 when he was with the Jets. He\u2019s spent his most recent years in Los Angeles under Sean McVay, who handles the offense.<\/p>\n LaFleur\u2019s last season in New York saw him run 11 personnel on more than 68% of snaps, an increase of nearly 20% from what the Cardinals did a year ago. He also likes to go fast, running 63.2 plays per game in 2022.
