It’s all over for Canadians in singles play at the US Open.

Leylah Fernandez and Denis Shapovalov both lost third-round matches against higher-ranked opponents in the third round on Friday, putting an end to Canadian chances in New York.

Fernandez lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Friday to third-seeded American Jessica Pegula in the third round of the final Grand Slam of the year.

Fernandez, seeded 31st, blasted out of the gates against Pegula, dominating the first set in just half an hour.

After going down a break midway through the second set, the Laval, Que., native had multiple opportunities to break back during a lengthy game immediately following, but failed to convert.

Fernandez was just 3-for-11 on break-point opportunities over the match, while Pegula made good on all three of her chances.

Pegula then won an early break against Fernandez in the final set and never looked back.

The American will next face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, the No. 16 seed who beat Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-3 earlier Friday.

Shapovalov played the last match at Arthur Ashe Stadium and lost 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 to No. 8 seed Ben Shelton of the U.S. in a testy match that finished at 2:07 a.m. ET.

Shapovalov complained twice about Shelton’s grunts to the umpire and also was unhappy with the pro-Shelton crowd at one point.

The American fans jeered Shapovalov a couple of times while he was speaking to the ump.

Shelton, who has won the National Bank Open presented by Rogers the past two years, is now 5-0 against Shapovalov for his career. He next faces Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

Fernandez and Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski both play second-round women’s doubles matches on Saturday.

It’s all over for Canadians in singles play at the US Open.
