McLaren<\/a> driver Oscar Piastri<\/a> is under an FIA stewards\u2019 investigation following an impeding incident with Red Bull\u2019s Liam Lawson in qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

The incident in question took place during the Q2 segment of qualifying at Monza.<\/p>\n

Lawson was one of three drivers, alongside championship leader Kimi Antonelli and Williams\u2019 Alex Albon, who went into qualifying knowing they faced a back-of-the-grid start due to engine penalties.<\/p>\n

Lawson\u2019s towing service was therefore available for Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen. It was a service absent in Q3.<\/p>\n

As Lawson embarked on his final Q2 lap, chasing a spot in the final stage of qualifying, he encountered Piastri\u2019s slow-moving McLaren at the opening chicane.<\/p>\n

It was an unwelcome obstacle quickly cleared by Lawson, though he would fail to make Q3 with that lap. Piastri did progress.<\/p>\n

The stewards quickly noted that incident. It was upgraded to a post-qualifying impeding investigation.<\/p>\n

Piastri and Lawson, along with team representatives of McLaren and Red Bull, were required to report to the stewards at 17:40 local time in Italy.<\/p>\n

Piastri was at the head of the queue for the all-important final Q3 runs.<\/p>\n

He missed the Turn 1\/2 chicane for the second time in qualifying, just as it was confirmed that he would be investigated after qualifying for that potential Lawson impede.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, Lando Norris, who was running directly behind his McLaren teammate, lost his tow.<\/p>\n

The end result of Italian Grand Prix qualifying was a shock pole position for Alpine\u2019s Pierre Gasly. He will be joined on the front row by Mercedes\u2019 George Russell.<\/p>\n

As it stands, Piastri is set to head the second row, with Ferrari\u2019s Charles Leclerc for company, subject to the verdict reached by the FIA stewards.<\/p>\n

Piastri will desperately want to avoid a grid penalty, considering the potential opportunity to respond against Norris in the intra-team McLaren battle.<\/p>\n

Norris claimed back-to-back wins at the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix, re-igniting talk of a challenge to defend his title.<\/p>\n

Piastri, meanwhile, has not been on the podium since Miami. Granted, he was in contention to win in Hungary before contact when lapping Carlos Sainz, and subsequently a gearbox failure.<\/p>\n

Norris is due to start P8 only at Monza, which would give Piastri an opportunity to begin turning the tide, if he holds on to his P3 grid slot.<\/p>\n

The return of so-called \u2018yo-yo racing\u2019 is anticipated on Sunday at Monza, this an energy-starved circuit. With Gasly and Russell ahead of Piastri as it stands, the McLaren driver could contend for the race win, if spared a grid penalty.<\/p>\n
