Severe thunderstorms swept across the Greater Toronto Area on Wednesday, bringing down trees, causing power outages and flooding some streets.<\/p>\n

The storms left thousands without power on Wednesday evening and forced the closure of the Don Valley Parkway in both directions between Bloor Street and the Jarvis street exit on the Gardiner Expressway.\u00a0Several roads were closed in Toronto due to flooding, police said.<\/p>\n

In Vaughan, York Regional Police warned of “severe flooding,” with the intersection of Jane Street and Highway 7 fully submerged.\u00a0Several cars were seen nearly underwater in that area.<\/p>\n

“Please avoid the area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads,” the post said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, about 35,000 customers were without power across the city as of about 10 p.m. because of the storm, Toronto Hydro said. At the height of the outages, some 65,000 customers were affected, it said.<\/p>\n

“Safety remains our top priority as crews respond to reported hazards, including downed powerlines and damaged electrical equipment, while restoring service as safely and quickly as possible,” the utility said in an email.<\/p>\n

“We have added additional resources to support customers as we experience high call volumes and remain committed to supporting those impacted by the storm and keeping customers informed throughout the restoration effort.”<\/p>\n

Concert venue damaged, emergency department affected<\/p>\n

Live Nation Canada said in a statement that Rogers Stadium, a venue in north Toronto, sustained
“significant damage” due to the extreme weather.<\/p>\n

“As always, the safety of our employees and on-site contractors is our top priority. Fortunately, no one was injured during today’s extreme weather event,” Live Nation Canada said.<\/p>\n

“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and will provide further information as it becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Garron Hospital, located in East York, reported its emergency department was affected by flooding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“If you’re experiencing a potentially life-threatening issue, please note that our ED remains open and operational,” the hospital said on its website.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it also urged anyone experiencing a non-life-threatening health issue to consider “other care options” in the area. <\/p>\n

Earlier on Wednesday, Environment Canada issued a red-level warning for “extremely dangerous” thunderstorms in Toronto and Mississauga but those have been lifted. The watches and warnings in the GTA changed rapidly throughout the day, and included a risk of a tornado.<\/p>\n

The federal weather agency said the storm that could have impacted Mississauga was “particularly dangerous,” with its radar estimating winds could reach near 150 km\/h.<\/p>\n

Toronto police, meanwhile, said they received more 100 reports of downed wires and fallen trees in several locations after a storm blew through the city at about 5 p.m.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

“It’s just getting piled up! It is difficult for our dispatcher even to sort this out!” Toronto police spokesperson Masuma Akhter said in an email.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

In a post on the social media platform X, police added: “Please use caution when driving. Slow down, and drive according to the road conditions. Give yourself time to get to your destination. Seek shelter if necessary.”<\/p>\n

The TTC reported flooding at Union, St. Patrick and Museum stations. Trains bypassed St. Patrick station but service has resumed. Trains were not stopping northbound at Union station toward Finch due to the flooding. <\/p>\n

Toronto Pearson Airport said the storm caused some delays and cancellations. Those travelling Wednseday should check their flight status with their airline before coming to the airport, it said in a\u00a0post to X<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The departures board on the airport’s\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0showed dozens of flights that were set to leave Wednesday evening were either delayed or cancelled. <\/p>\n

CNE closes early due to severe weather <\/p>\n

The CNE, meanwhile, first paused outdoor program activities and all high rides due to the weather, then closed the grounds at 7 p.m. and buildings at 8 pm. All performances that were set to take place at the Bell Soundstage at the Bandshell were also cancelled.<\/p>\n

Guests were advised “to remain calm and follow directions provided by event staff and security personnel to leave the site via designated exits and departure routes,” the CNE said. <\/p>\n

In a post on X on Wednesday, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the city had activated its emergency operations centre.<\/p>\n

“City crews are already out responding to downed power wires, fallen trees, flooding and more. TTC is working to restore service where it has been affected by flooding and debris spread by high winds,” Chow said. <\/p>\n

Chow urged residents to stay clear of downed powerlines and report any electrical hazards to Toronto Hydro and to check that their downspouts are draining properly and are away from the foundations of their homes to help prevent flooding.<\/p>\n

All thunderstorm watches and warnings for the Toronto area were lifted by 7:45 p.m.<\/p>\n
