But even though Engelbert herself has confirmed the decision and framed it as a voluntary exit, for some prominent voices watching from the outside, it does not feel that way.<\/p>\n
With Engelbert\u2019s tenure having been marked by a string of controversies, heated debates, and pointed criticism from players and media alike, Dave Portnoy and several WNBA analysts have offered a considerably less flattering interpretation of her impending departure. To them, this looks far less like a commissioner choosing to walk away and far more like the league showing her the door.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cRetiring,\u201d Portnoy wrote pointedly, reacting to the news on X. NBA insider Brett Siegel, in his own response, also highlighted a single word from the announcement: \u201cdecided,\u201d with a tone that suggested he too found the framing somewhat convenient. Clay Travis, on the other hand, did not bother with subtlety at all. \u201cCathy Engelbert is \u2018retiring,\u2019 aka being fired. So the WNBA will have a new commissioner. Hopefully the new commissioner can tell us what a woman is,\u201d he wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n The official retirement announcement was made on Friday morning, September 4, 2026, through a joint press release issued by the league. Both Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released statements confirming the news and underscoring the league\u2019s growth during her tenure.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI retire knowing we have built something bigger, stronger and more enduring than we could have imagined,\u201d Engelbert said in her statement. \u201cI am grateful to the WNBA and NBA team owners and staff, players, investors, fans, and the powerhouse league office staff, who believed in what this league could become.\u201d<\/p>\n Engelbert assumed the commissioner role in 2019, becoming the first person to ever hold that title in the league\u2019s history. Under her leadership, the league initiated its largest expansion boom to date, growing from 12 teams to a planned 18 by 2030.<\/p>\n The financial transformation has been equally significant. Perhaps her most defining business achievement was brokering an 11-year, $3.1 billion media rights agreement with Disney, NBC, Amazon, and other partners, a deal that begins in the 2026 season, secures $281 million in annual revenue, and guarantees more than 200 regular-season games broadcast or streamed live every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n However, despite those considerable achievements, there is a persistent view that Engelbert\u2019s strengths as a corporate business strategist were not always matched by an equivalent ability to navigate the complex social, cultural, and interpersonal dynamics of a professional sports league. In fact, as a result of this, players called out her leadership directly and publicly on more than one occasion.<\/p>\n In 2025, Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier explicitly accused Engelbert of being \u201cnegligent\u201d in her governance, and went as far as describing her leadership as \u201cthe worst in the world.\u201d <\/p>\n This season\u2019s changes that were meant to improve officiating only created more controversy. While foul calls increased at the bgiining of the season under the supervision of the special officiating task force, it didn\u2019t help because missed calls came under even more scrutiny from the fans.<\/p>\n When Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas faced threats to her life after referees had initially missed calling her flagrant foul on Caitlin Clark on June 24, she called the commissioner out directly<\/a> for her sustained silence and failure to publicly address or protect players.<\/p>\n Then the transgender athlete debate that started in court after Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham opposed trans athletes in women\u2019s sports turned into a controversy that still hasn\u2019t died down completely.
