Icon Sportswire\/\/Getty Images<\/p>\nWhen Ryan Preece won the NASCAR Cup season finale at Daytona, his victory paid two dividends\u2014one for the RFK Racing driver and the other for Jimmie Johnson\u2019s Legacy Motor Club.<\/p>\n
The victory qualified Preece for the Chase for the Cup Series championship. However, the Charter Preece\u2019s team is using this year moves to Johnson\u2019s team next year so Legacy Motor Club will reap the financial benefits.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we just put an extra million dollars in his (Johnson\u2019s) pocket,\u201d RFK Racing co-owner Brad Keselowski said at Darlington Raceway.<\/p>\n
The Charter Preece\u2019s No. 60 team is using this year was leased by RFK Racing from Rick Ware Racing. Teams owning a Charter are allowed to lease it for only one season. However, Johnson\u2019s team has already purchased that Charter from RWR for 2027 per a lawsuit settlement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt didn\u2019t hurt my feelings that he (Preece) won Saturday in Daytona,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThis season it\u2019s gonna finish higher than our two cars did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Entering Darlington, Legacy Motor Club\u2019s two cars\u2014driven by Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek\u2014were 21st and 29th, respectively, in the owner standings. The lowest Preece will finish in the owner standings is 16th.<\/p>\n
\u201cI sent (RFK Racing President) Chip Bowers a text on that green-white-checker, \u2018Are you gonna make it? You got enough fuel?\u2019 He said, \u2018I have no idea,\u2019\u201d Johnson recounted about the text exchange during the overtime Daytona finish. \u201cI said a few prayers for that 60 car.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since it doesn\u2019t appear that a Charter is available for RFK Racing to purchase for next year, Keselowski says Preece will race in 2027 as an open car. That means he\u2019s not guaranteed a starting position in the 36-point races.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have two Charters for three teams next year, and we\u2019re gonna most likely race a third car unchartered, absent some kind of situation I\u2019m not aware of at the moment,\u201d Keselowski said. \u201cThere\u2019s not much we can do about it other than just go out and compete and make sure we\u2019re being as financially prudent as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Keselowski believes the only race in 2027 where there may be more cars than starting positions is the season opening Daytona 500.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re committed to getting it in, and if it doesn\u2019t, we\u2019ll figure that out when it comes,\u201d Keselowski said.<\/p>\n
Keselowski said he doesn\u2019t plan on sacrificing the Charters currently used by his No. 6 Ford and Chris Buscher\u2019s No. 17 for Preece\u2019s No. 60.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are in the middle of September and February\u2019s a long ways away. A lot could change,\u201d Keselowski said. <\/p>\n
