{"id":886626,"date":"2026-09-07T10:42:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T10:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/886626\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T10:42:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T10:42:21","slug":"nascar-power-rankings-after-round-one-of-the-chase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/886626\/","title":{"rendered":"NASCAR Power Rankings After Round One Of The Chase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24115635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Christopher-Bell.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Bell celebrates in victory lane after NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington.\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sep 6, 2026; Darlington, South Carolina, USA; Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell (20) celebrates his win during the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.<\/p>\n<p>After seven previous runner-up finishes in the NASCAR Cup Series this season, Joe Gibbs Racing star Christopher Bell finally broke through to claim victory on Sunday, and he did so at perhaps the best possible time.<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s victory in the historic Southern 500 at Darlington, which also served as the opening race of the 2026 Chase for a championship, put the rest of the field on notice that he\u2019s a genuine title contender.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, he not only shot up the series point standings but also the latest edition of our power rankings, where it becomes clear that there are several drivers who could lay claim to a championship come November.<\/p>\n<p>2026 NASCAR Cup Series Power Rankings: Week 27<\/p>\n<p>In last week\u2019s edition of the power rankings, we took a closer look at the 16-driver field entering the Chase, and more specifically, at which drivers we felt could prove a genuine threat to points leader Denny Hamlin, who has been snake-bitten in the past in pursuit of an elusive first championship.<\/p>\n<p>Little did we know that the opening round of the Chase would see several of those drivers prove why we felt that way, and Hamlin show exactly why it\u2019s no sure thing that he finishes the job despite a dominant regular season.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s rankings, like the point standings, are extremely condensed, pointing to the possibility of some serious volatility in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n<p>10) Chase Elliott<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23829204\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Chase-Elliott.jpg\" alt=\"Chase Elliott NASCAR\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Scott Kinser\/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>After his win at Texas Motor Speedway earlier this season, Chase Elliott reached a high-water mark of third in our power rankings and looked as if he\u2019d regained his mojo after a couple of difficult seasons in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, it\u2019s been largely disappointing for Elliott and his team, who have backslid both in the points and power rankings, and entered the Chase looking to turn things around.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, that\u2019s not what happened at Darlington, as they spent the majority of the night either just inside or just outside the top 10, before eventually finishing 14th and picking up no stage points in the process.<\/p>\n<p>If Elliott is going to make a championship surge, he needs to get things going in the right direction in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brobible.com\/sports\/article\/nascar-cup-series-power-rankings-entering-2026-chase\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Last Week<\/a>:\u00a09th\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascar.com\/standings\/nascar-cup-series\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASCAR Point Standings<\/a>:\u00a09th (-72)<\/p>\n<p>8) Joey Logano<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23835795\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Joey-Logano.jpg\" alt=\"Joey Logano NASCAR\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Gary A. Vasquez\/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>On the opposite end of the spectrum of Elliott, Joey Logano entered the Chase with a significant amount of momentum, with a pair of recent victories and a slew of top-10 finishes.<\/p>\n<p>However, Darlington was one of his worst tracks earlier in the season, when he finished outside the top 30 and well behind teammates Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, things were a bit better for the three-time series champion, as he fought his way to a top-10 finish. However, the lack of points in either of the opening two stages meant that he lost ground to Hamlin in the points.<\/p>\n<p>Still, at a track where he could have lost significant ground, Logano more or less held serve, and now heads to St. Louis, where he\u2019ll be a favorite to contend for victory.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a09th\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a08th (-72)<\/p>\n<p>8) Bubba Wallace<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23807050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Bubba-Wallace.jpg\" alt=\"Bubba Wallace NASCAR\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Joe Puetz \/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>Early in the season, Bubba Wallace looked like he was in for a career year. He was consistently running inside the top five, and it appeared that multiple race wins were a sure thing.<\/p>\n<p>Then the summer hit, and everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Wallace and his team. From self-inflicted mistakes to issues on pit road, Wallace fell from inside the top five in points to out of the top 10 entirely.<\/p>\n<p>But in recent weeks, we\u2019ve seen glimpses of the early-season form that was so promising. He finished second in New Hampshire, ran well at Daytona, and then led 38 laps on Sunday at Darlington, finishing in the top five in both stages and then in eighth when the checkered flag fell.<\/p>\n<p>While the final result may not be what Wallace had hoped for, it\u2019s clear he and his team\u2019s confidence are building at the right time.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a0UR\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a010th (-81)<\/p>\n<p>7) Kyle Larson<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23688695\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Kyle-Larson.jpg\" alt=\"Kyle Larson NASCAR\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Andrew Nelles \/ The Tennessean \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>That Larson doesn\u2019t move forward in this week\u2019s power rankings is more a matter of circumstance than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>For much of the late portion of Sunday night\u2019s race at Darlington, it appeared he was in line to snap his over-year-long winless streak before being passed by Bell with under 20 laps remaining.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows whether crew chief Cliff Daniels\u2019 decision to leave Larson out on older tires late in the race ultimately cost him the chance to fight for the win. But one thing is clear: Larson and company had more speed than they\u2019ve shown for much of the season, and that should be concerning for his competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a07th\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a07th (-49)<\/p>\n<p>6) Ty Gibbs<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23807051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/DennyHamlin-TyGibbs.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs at New Hampshire Motor Speedway NASCAR Cup Series race\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Eric Canha\/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>Dropping Ty Gibbs from third to sixth in the power rankings after a second-place finish might seem absurd on its face, but hear us out for a second.<\/p>\n<p>While Gibbs\u2019 teammates all ran inside the top 10 for the majority of the night (before Hamlin\u2019s issues, which we\u2019ll get to later), the 23-year-old struggled for speed, finishing the opening stage in 10th and missing out on stage points entirely in the second segment.<\/p>\n<p>The team and Gibbs got things dialed in at the end of the night and looked like they might compete for the victory at one point, but the lack of stage points proved costly, as he lost ground in the standings to multiple drivers who had more consistent nights.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a03rd\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a06th (-39)<\/p>\n<p>5) Chase Briscoe<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23710509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Chase-Briscoe-Son.jpg\" alt=\"NASCAR Chase Briscoe son\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Mark J. Rebilas\/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>Had it not been for a fueling issue in the middle of stage two, which caused him to come to pit road early and surrender important track position, we may well be talking about Chase Briscoe winning his third consecutive Southern 500.<\/p>\n<p>The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was impressive all night, leading 30 laps and finishing in the top 10 in both stages. For much of the third stage, he looked like the biggest threat to Bell and Larson\u2019s chances of victory, and could well have been higher on this list if not for a slightly disappointing final stint of the race on new tires.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Briscoe, like his teammates Bell and Gibbs, is one of the biggest threats to Hamlin\u2019s title hopes, and he showed as much as on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a05th\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a05th (-37)<\/p>\n<p>4) Tyler Reddick<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23980090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Tyler-Reddick.jpg\" alt=\"Tyler Reddick COTA 2026\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Michael C. Johnson\/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t look now, but Tyler Reddick, like his teammate Bubba Wallace, is beginning to look like the Tyler Reddick that we saw dominate the early parts of the 2026 season, winning five races in the process.<\/p>\n<p>He led five times for 74 laps on Sunday, claiming victory in the opening stage before issues on pit road set him back in stage two.<\/p>\n<p>Still, after a difficult finish to the second stage, Reddick was able to steady himself and drove all the way back up for a third-place finish. Reddick now has an average finish of 4.67 in his last three races, and you\u2019re beginning to see the confidence that he had in early months return at the perfect time for the 23XI Racing driver.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a04th\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a04th (-24)<\/p>\n<p>3) Christopher Bell<br \/>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24115635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Christopher-Bell.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Bell celebrates in victory lane after NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington.\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sep 6, 2026; Darlington, South Carolina, USA; Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell (20) celebrates his win during the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.<\/p>\n<p>One week ago, we wrote about how Bell\u2019s incredible propensity for finishing in second place this season might not be all that bad of a thing. If he finished in second for all 10 Chase races, he\u2019d likely be lifting a championship at the end of it.<\/p>\n<p>While that was true, it turns out he did one better.<\/p>\n<p>There was never any doubting the speed of Bell\u2019s cars each week, or his talent behind the wheel. But for whatever reason, he just hadn\u2019t gotten over the hump this season.<\/p>\n<p>Now, that monkey is off his back. Bell led four times for 46 laps on Sunday night, including taking home both the race victory and maximum points in stage two. Oh, and he also picked up a bonus point for the fastest lap of the race. His 73-point night was just three shy of the absolute maximum for one race, and puts him squarely in the battle for the points lead.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a06th\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a02nd (-12)<\/p>\n<p>3) Ryan Blaney<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24089337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Ryan-Blaney-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan Blaney burnout after NASCAR Cup Series win at Atlanta\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Getty Image<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">HAMPTON, GEORGIA &#8211; JULY 12: Ryan Blaney, driver of the #12 BODYARMOR FLASH I.V. Ford, celebrates with a burnout after winning the NASCAR Cup Series Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart at EchoPark Speedway on July 12, 2026 in Hampton, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Blaney did exactly what he needed to do and then some on Sunday night, holding serve (and breaking even, to some degree) with Hamlin and the Toyotas, who have proven to have the fastest cars on intermediate tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Forced to start deep in the pack after qualifying was rained out, Blaney carved his way through the field to finish fifth in the opening stage and then maintained that track position in stage two, finishing sixth.<\/p>\n<p>While his car seemed to get away from him a bit in the final stage, dropping him toward the back of the top 10, a decision to pit under the final caution of the race and take tires paid dividends, as Blaney drove back up to fourth position, capping off an extremely productive night for Ford\u2019s biggest threat to win a championship.<\/p>\n<p>Last Week:\u00a02nd\u00a0NASCAR Point Standings:\u00a03rd (-16)<\/p>\n<p>1) Denny Hamlin<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23853699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Denny-Hamlin.jpg\" alt=\"Denny Hamlin NASCAR\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-media-credit\">\u00a9 Mark J. Rebilas\/Imagn<\/p>\n<p>Fair or not, Hamlin saw his significant lead in the standings slashed to just 25 to start the 10-race Chase.<\/p>\n<p>Through two stages at Darlington, that didn\u2019t seem like a big issue, as Hamlin finished third in each of the stages, amassing the second-most points behind only his teammate Bell.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the final stage, a poor pit stop put Hamlin behind the eight ball before an incident involving Michael McDowell sent him slamming into the wall.<\/p>\n<p>While the wreck didn\u2019t take Hamlin out of the race entirely, it did significantly damage his car and eventually led to him going a lap down. Hamlin battled back to finish 18th, limiting the damage to some extent.
