rapidly warming northern region.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Two researchers from Russia\u2019s Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute boarded Xuelong 2 as part of China\u2019s 16th Arctic Ocean Expedition, according to a report by state broadcaster CCTV on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lin Long, captain of the Xuelong 2 sea ice team, this joint observation has been more \u201cpractical\u201d than previous <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3327925\/china-marks-largest-arctic-ocean-foray-first-manned-deep-dive-below-polar-ice?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chinese Arctic voyages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">During the mission, they visually observed ice conditions along the ship\u2019s route, recording details about the concentration, thickness and type of sea ice, snow cover, atmospheric factors and large animal sightings.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cBy taking part in this joint observation, we were able to learn from the Chinese team\u2019s experience in sea ice observation and draw on the valuable aspects of their observation methods,\u201d CCTV quoted Evgeniy Kozlovskiy, a lead engineer at the Russian institute, as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The observations could complement satellite remote sensing, improve scientists\u2019 understanding of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/climate-change?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">climate
