If what’s past is prologue, as Shakespeare wrote, then Thomas Ponder out of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide has a lot to look forward to as he leads the PGA Tour Americas season points parade heading into the US$225,000 Digital Commerce Group Open from Thursday to Sunday this week at Uplands Golf Club, the penultimate stop in the 15-event 2026 PGA Tour Americas season, before closing out with the ATB Classic in Edmonton from Sept. 17-20 and the PGA Oceans 4 Tour Championship in the Dominican Republic.

Last year’s season points champion Michael Brennan, who was tied for fifth in the 2025 Victoria tournament, graduated from the PGA Tour Americas to win two events this year on the 2026 PGA Tour.

That’s how quickly career fortunes can change.

The top-10 finishers in the 2026 PGA Tour Americas will earn their cards into the 2027 Korn Ferry Tour, which is the level below the PGA in the pro golf ladder. Using a hockey analogy, the PGA Tour Americas is the ECHL, the Korn Ferry the AHL and the PGA the NHL. In baseball terms, the PGA Tour Americas is Double-A, the Korn Ferry Triple-A and the PGA the MLB level.

But Brennan blasted through all that when he won the Utah Bank Open on the PGA Tour, which he entered on a sponsor exemption, and that allowed him to skip the Korn Ferry Tour entirely and to guarantee a PGA Tour card for two seasons through 2027, and jump to 34th in the world ranking. He was ranked 451 at the start of the season. Brennan has gone on to win the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship last month and has added his name to the pantheon of past Victoria Open performers who, since 1981, went on to the PGA Tour such as Steve Stricker, Scott McCarron, Stuart Appleby, Kirk Triplett and Mike Weir to a more recent generation that includes Tony Finau, Nick Taylor, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes.

“You could have walked Uplands last September, not even a full year ago yet, beside a future PGA Tour player ranked 34th now in the world,” said Digital Commerce Group Open tournament director Brad Norris-Jones. “That is the level of golfer we have coming through Victoria every year in the PGA Tour Americas. Players make it from here.”

The rise likely won’t be quite as meteoric as that of Brennan for this year’s top-10 hopefuls on the PGA Tour Americas, but then who was expecting that from Brennan, who since appearing at Uplands last September, has gone on to play in all four majors this year — the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and British Open.

The most recent two PGA Tour Americas tournaments were the Manitoba Open and CRMC Championship last month, won respectively by Swede Daniel Svard, the two-time NCAA Big Ten conference champion out of Northwestern, and Justin Biwer out of the NCAA University of Colorado, who each pocketed US$40,500 — which is also the prize for the winner of the Digital Commerce Group Open. Just as important are the 500 points for the season standings that go to each winner.

The current PGA Tour Americas season points-leader, Ponder, knows Uplands well after co-leading the Victoria Open in 2024 after two rounds. The 2026 top 10 includes two Canadians who are hunting down their Korn Ferry Tour cards. Etienne Papineau is fourth in the season standings and Joey Savoie ninth. They also both know Uplands well. Papineau is a native of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., who has played in the RBC Canadian Open. The graduate of the NCAA University of West Virginia Mountaineers won the Victoria Open in 2023. Savoie of La Prairie, Que., played in the 2018 RBC Canadian Open and represented Canada in the 2019 Lima Pan Am Games, and has come through Uplands before on the Tour.

“The PGA Tour Americas gives Canadians a chance in pro golf and they often have the biggest galleries following them in our Victoria tournament,” said Norris-Jones.

Meanwhile, on the Uplands course this year look for what Norris-Jones describes as “younger identity and vibe … almost Waste Management like,” referring to the PGA Tour event in Scottsdale, Arizona, which provides for a more raucous atmosphere than other more sedate PGA Tour events.

“We will have a DJ and more food and drink options and just make it a more vibrant atmosphere,” said Norris-Jones.

“Membership is way up at golf clubs with waiting lists, and the biggest increase has been among the 25-45 age demographic, who are looking for something more lively to come out to watch pro golf.”

The PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamérica merged to form PGA Tour Americas in 2023. The former Canadian Tour became PGA Tour Canada in 2013, with 67 PGA Tour Canada alumni having advanced to play on the PGA Tour over the past decade with 29 PGA Tour victories between them. More than 300 PGA Tour Canada alumni have gone on to play on the Korn Ferry Tour since 2013.
