She covers Inuit self-governance, food security and, generally, daily life in the territory. (Graphic courtesy of We-News)<\/p>\n<p>She also isn\u2019t real.<\/p>\n<p>Qammaniq is an \u201cAI correspondent\u201d for We-News.com, a website that presents itself as a news outlet but uses 121 AI \u201cjournalists\u201d to repackage and republish work from real media, across the world. <\/p>\n<p>If Qammaniq\u2019s reporting comes across as deeply local, it\u2019s because it is. The reporting belongs to northern media such as CBC North, Nunavut News and Nunatsiaq News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a journalist, it frankly disgusts me to see the public\u2019s right to know being manipulated by algorithms and artificial intelligence,\u201d said Brent Jolly, president of the Canadian Association of Journalists, in an interview. \u201cIt frustrates me to no end that this is something that the public doesn\u2019t seem to realize, and that we\u2019re not asking more questions about what\u2019s happening and how we can address this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike a real newsroom, fake ones can\u2019t be held accountable the same way if they publish false information, Jolly said.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260828-gn-chartered-accountants\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/A-14817.94.gif\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In We-News\u2019s case, it\u2019s unclear to what extent humans review its content. Its website claims that the outlet delivers \u201cessential stories without sacrificing reliability\u201d and that every story \u201cis confirmed by multiple sources before publication.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>When Nunatsiaq News attempted to use the contact email on its website, the email bounced back.<\/p>\n<p>We-News is owned by Hong Kong-based company AZ Medias Ltd, its publisher is David Dragesco, and the website\u2019s hosting provider is located in France.<\/p>\n<p>Nunatsiaq News attempted to get in touch with someone named David Dragesco, a search-engine optimization expert whose business website DiscoReady is also published by AZ Medias Ltd., but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theft is blatant and it\u2019s happening on an industrial scale,\u201d said Paul Deegan, president of News Media Canada, which represents print and digital news publishers throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the only way newsrooms can fight back against their copyrighted material being stolen is a lawsuit, he said, which isn\u2019t realistic. Many publishers can\u2019t afford to litigate, and tracking down offenders across borders to serve them with legal documents is difficult.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/250404-gn-hiring\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/250404.100.86.jpg\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even if a newsroom succeeds in getting one website shut down, Jolly added, new ones can always be created.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a game of whack-a-mole,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>News Media Canada has asked that Canada\u2019s Copyright Act not be amended to make exceptions for text and data mining, a change Google has lobbied for in AI training.<\/p>\n<p>Jolly and Deegan said they were disappointed to see the subject of copyright omitted from Canada\u2019s new AI strategy, released by the Liberal government earlier this summer. The strategy includes more than $2 billion in funding to increase the country\u2019s AI capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nunatsiaq News asked Evan Solomon, Canada\u2019s minister of artificial intelligence, what his position was on AI republishing of copyrighted materials from newsrooms, but did not receive an answer. Culture Minister Marc Miller, who co-hosted the country\u2019s first national summit on artificial intelligence alongside Solomon, didn\u2019t state his position on the matter either.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/2026_annual_neas\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2026-annual-NEAS-April.gif\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe government remains focused on helping journalists, writers and artists create and share the work that informs Canadians and tells our stories,\u201d wrote David Larose, a spokesperson for the minister, noting an AI and cultural advisory council has been established to provide advice to government in response to the impacts AI is having on the cultural sector.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Al-Rawi is an associate professor at Simon Fraser University, in B.C., and the lead on the Disinformation Project, a research institute that studies fake news.
