PEOPLE with complex mental-health, addiction and brain-injury needs will get the care they need as construction begins on the new mental-health and substance-use facility in Surrey, announced by Premier David Eby in July.<\/p>\n

The renovated facility will add 60 new beds, including involuntary admission capacity, to the health-care system and will also include treatment and rehabilitation services to help people in the Fraser Health region who have the most severe mental-health and substance-use issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpecialized care and treatment for patients with the most complex needs is a vital part of their path to wellness,\u201d said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Health. \u201cThese new beds in Surrey mean more people will be able to access this care closer to home, building on the progress already made to create a system of care that meets people where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The beds will add to more than 2,000 existing mental-health beds in B.C. that can provide care for people admitted both voluntarily and involuntarily under the Mental Health Act. It includes beds recently opened at the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre and Spiritwood Homes in Maple Ridge, as well as ongoing efforts to expand access to specialized care throughout the province.<\/p>\n

The new 60-bed care facility at 6833\/6869 King George Blvd. in Surrey will provide mental-health and substance-use care and a range of specialized services to support people with complex mental-health and addiction-care needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurrey has seen a clear and growing need for more mental-health and substance-use supports,\u201d said Garry Begg, parliamentary secretary for Surrey infrastructure and MLA for Surrey-Guildford. \u201cThese new beds will make a real difference for individuals and families by improving access to care when it\u2019s needed most and helping meet long-standing community demand for these services.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Province approved a budget of as much as $57 million for the project. Construction is underway, and the facility is anticipated to open in spring 2028. Developed in collaboration with the Province, Fraser Health, the Provincial Health Services Authority and local partners, the facility will be renovated into a secure mental-health and addiction-care facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith construction now underway in Surrey, we\u2019re one step closer to bringing this important, specialized care closer to home,\u201d said Amna Shah, parliamentary secretary for mental health and addictions and MLA for Surrey City Centre. \u201cThis new facility will provide a safe, supportive environment for people experiencing complex mental-health and substance-use challenges who require treatment, with care focused on stability, healing and recovery for people in Surrey and surrounding communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Work is also underway to assess future bed capacity in other regions of B.C.<\/p>\n

The creation of new designated mental-health services under the Mental Health Act is a key recommendation from Dr. Daniel Vigo, who was appointed B.C.\u2019s first chief scientific adviser for psychiatry, toxic drugs and concurrent disorders in June 2024.<\/p>\n

This is one part of the government\u2019s work to improve access to mental-health and addictions care, which includes a focus on expanding supports and services that work for everyone. The Province continues to add and expand care, including early intervention and prevention, treatment and recovery services, supportive and complex-care housing, overdose-prevention services and more.<\/p>\n
