The four-lane overpass, also referred to as the Goreway Bridge, took its first vehicles last Oct. 15.<\/p>\n
At that time, Mayor Carolyn Parrish promised the new structure would \u201calleviate the delays and traffic headaches for Malton commuters.\u201d<\/p>\n
This week, City of Mississauga Ward 5 Coun. Natalie Hart confirmed the overpass has indeed delivered the goods not only for daily traffic, but also for residents and businesses in her ward.<\/p>\n
Hart told INsauga.com the overpass is \u201cincredibly important\u201d to the community in several ways.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has improved traffic flow along Goreway (Drive), but also the other north\/south arterials,\u201d she said. \u201cMost notably, we no longer see vehicle traffic stuck at the tracks for the train traffic that is moving goods in our community. This is good for business and residents alike.<\/p>\n
\u201cFeedback on the bridge has been positive from drivers, pedestrians, residents and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though well received by the community, the Goreway Drive Overpass has brought with it some privacy concerns due to its height and proximity to nearby homes, Hart added.<\/p>\n

Some area residents have complained that those travelling on the bridge \u2014 in vehicles, on bikes and on foot \u2014 have direct sightlines into their backyards and can possibly see into homes through windows as well.<\/p>\n
Solutions being sought include privacy screens and sound barriers.<\/p>\n
Hart said there remains work to be done to address residents\u2019 concerns over privacy and the city is working with CN Rail on solutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m committed to addressing the privacy concerns raised by residents so that this will continue to serve the needs of Ward 5 in an equitable manner,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Parrish, long a supporter of the overpass project going back to her days as Ward 5 councillor between 2014 and 2024, said earlier the bridge \u201chas been a long-standing priority for the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
She noted earlier the community waited three decades for the Goreway Drive\/Brandon Gate Drive bridge to be built.<\/p>\n
$40M cost split three ways\u00a0<\/p>\n
Cost of the bridge was upwards of $40 million, according to project leaders, and the amount was split among the three partners \u2014 cities of Mississauga and Brampton, and CN Rail.<\/p>\n
As the overpass opened in October 2025, Hart described it at the time as \u201ca much-needed infrastructure project that many Malton residents are excited about.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added the Goreway Bridge \u201cmakes travel along this busy corridor safer and more reliable for families, commuters and commercial drivers while also supporting future growth within the area. It will enhance safety and strengthen connections across both Brampton and Mississauga, connecting two key employment and growth areas.\u201d<\/p>\n
City of Mississauga officials added the overpass also allows for smoother travel for cyclists and pedestrians, in addition to drivers.<\/p>\n

Goreway Drive functions as a major collector roadway in Mississauga that \u201cprovides north-south connectivity for commuter, commercial and emergency services vehicles between (Mississauga and Brampton),\u201d project officials said earlier.<\/p>\n
Prior to the overpass being built, the major road crossed the three sets of CN tracks some 300 metres north of Brandon Gate Drive in Mississauga.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs one of the busiest freight train lines in the region, with approximately 50 freight trains using the east-west tracks per day, this caused significant traffic delays,\u201d the City of Mississauga said earlier, noting traffic would often be backed up on Goreway Drive.<\/p>\n
Getting commuters where they need to go faster\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sam Rogers, the City of Mississauga\u2019s commissioner of transportation and works, said in October 2025 the new route \u201cwill get commuters and residents where they need to go faster; waiting for the trains to pass through the corridor will no longer be a barrier.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said late last year the new bridge \u201cdelivers significant improvements along Goreway Drive, spanning from Brandon Gate Drive to Kenview Boulevard (in Brampton). By eliminating the at-grade CN rail crossing just south of Steeles Avenue, the project will enhance intercity traffic flow, reduce congestion and address long-standing delays.\u201d<\/p>\n
The City of Mississauga noted earlier the new overpass also includes:<\/p>\n
new curbs, sidewalks, a multi-use trail and landscaping
\nnew retaining walls
\nnew watermains and sewers
\nnew street lighting<\/p>\n
After decades of delays, preliminary work on the overpass began in September 2023 with the installation of the storm sewer along the tracks. In October of that year, the shovel officially went into the ground and work quickly ramped up on the massive infrastructure project<\/a>.Final contracts for the Goreway Drive Overpass were signed in May 2023. The contract for the project was awarded<\/a> to Alliance Verdi Civil Inc., of Bolton, and external consultants were then hired to manage the undertaking.<\/p>\n
