As many late-night hosts return from summer break, U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada was a main talking point. Joy Malbon explains. <\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2013 If you tune in to late-night talk shows, U.S. comedians are treating Donald Trump\u2019s trade war with Canada as \u201ccomedy gold.\u201d <\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel joked on ABC that while he was on vacation, the U.S. president has done \u201csome really dumb stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his opening monologue, Kimmel told his audience: \u201cWe have this inexplicable trade war with Canada right now. Zamboni head (a reference to Trump), who seems to have no problem with Russia and North Korea, has attacked Canada \u2013 our friendly neighbour \u2013 with 50 per cent tariffs!\u201d <\/p>\n

The Daily Show\u2019s Jon Stewart was almost apoplectic, ripping up papers and waving his hands in exasperation with the odd F-bomb while discussing the president\u2019s fixation with AI-generated memes.<\/p>\n

Stewart showed his audience a hockey cartoon Trump shared on Truth Social last weekend, mocking Prime Minister Mark Carney as \u201cgovernor.\u201d <\/p>\n

Contrasting both leaders, Stewart showed a video clip of Carney speaking to Canadians, saying: \u201cIn the face of unjustified unprovoked tariffs from the United States, we\u2019re stepping up and when we\u2019re united there\u2019s nothing Canadian workers can\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Stewart told his audience: \u201cHere\u2019s what we\u2019re getting,\u201d showing a clip of Trump, armed with a sharpie pen, writing \u201cLake America\u201d over the words \u201cLake Ontario\u201d on a map. <\/p>\n

The comedians mocked Trump for what they say is a \u201cself-inflicted conflict,\u201d pointing out that a reliable, dependable neighbour and ally is suddenly the \u201cenemy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jelly Roll filled in as guest host for Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week and called the escalating conflict \u201cridiculous,\u201d listing items like whiskey, smartphones and, yes, even toilet paper, that will get pricier. He joked that that\u2019s because the president \u201cis full of s—!\u201d <\/p>\n

American business voices, Democratic leaders and select Republicans have all have urged both governments to return to the negotiating table. <\/p>\n

In a moment of seriousness, The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon told his audience: \u201cIt\u2019s all a big distraction because everything is really bad right now, and Trump is worried the Republicans are going to get wiped out in the midterm elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talk about a punchline. <\/p>\n
