While the \u201cBarry\u201d star, now 80, confessed to feeling he wasn\u2019t actually \u201csuited\u201d\u00a0to direct the screwball comedy, he also admitted to being \u201cdevastated\u201d when he was fired after \u201c13 days of filming,\u201d presumably due to tension between himself and the movie\u2019s star. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m called into Jeff Katzenberg\u2019s office and he said, \u2018It\u2019s not in the dailies,’\u201d the \u201cArrested Development\u201d alum recalled.<\/p>\n
\u201cI then go to the set. I get my things. I drive home. I\u2019m fired as a director.\u201d <\/p>\n
Winkler added that he didn\u2019t \u201chandle it well\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in the interview, Winkler confirmed that before he was fired, the \u201cSaving Private Ryan\u201d star had gifted him a signed model plane. \u201cWhile we were having meetings, he built a plastic Piper Cub or something like that,\u201d he divulged.<\/p>\n

But the \u201cTurner & Hooch\u201d incident seemed to have cooled the relationship, with Winkler musing on their shared screen time on a beloved sitcom years prior to the incident. <\/p>\n
He noted that \u201cbefore he was a movie star,\u201d Hanks \u2014 now a 70-year-old Oscar winner \u2014 \u201cwas a guest star on \u2018Happy Days’\u201d in 1982. Winkler became a household name for his role as \u201cthe Fonz\u201d on the show.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did a retrospective of\u00a0\u2018Happy Days,\u2019 and we wanted 60 seconds of Tom Hanks in his episode,\u201d Winkler said, adding that they \u201cdid not get permission for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winkler told Besinger that he\u2019s \u201cstill working on\u201d his \u201cperspective\u201d about their current dynamic. When questioned if the relationship would ever \u201crepair itself,\u201d the actor said simply, \u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n
A rep for the \u201cCast Away\u201d actor did not immediately respond to Page Six\u2019s request for comment on Wednesday afternoon. <\/p>\n
