The governments of Ontario and Canada have announced up to $401.4 million in funding to help Mississauga build infrastructure needed to support new housing, including major transit projects.<\/p>\n
The funding is being provided through the Development Charges Reduction Program, which helps municipalities that have reduced development charges invest in infrastructure required to accommodate growth.<\/p>\n
Mississauga was among the first Ontario municipalities to substantially reduce development charges, with reductions of up to 100 per cent aimed at encouraging housing construction and improving affordability. The city has committed to maintaining those reductions until March 31, 2029.<\/p>\n
The funding will support housing-enabling infrastructure, including a new zero-emission transit maintenance and storage facility and a downtown transit mobility hub.<\/p>\n
As Canada\u2019s seventh-largest city, Mississauga plans significant investment in transit infrastructure is needed to support its growing population and new housing development, including a new zero-emission transit maintenance and storage facility on city-owned land at 7300 West Credit Ave.<\/p>\n
The city projects transit ridership will rise by 50 per cent by 2035, requiring an additional 250 buses.<\/p>\n
MiWay currently operates from the Edward J. Dowling Transit Facility and the Malton Satellite Facility. Both are at full capacity, limiting the system\u2019s ability to expand its fleet and improve service.<\/p>\n
The city is also planning a new Downtown Transit Mobility Hub as Mississauga\u2019s downtown continues to grow.<\/p>\n
The downtown area is currently home to about 36,000 residents and more than 1,100 businesses. Its population is expected to more than double by 2051.<\/p>\n
The planned hub would expand the City Centre Transit Terminal and bring together local and regional transit services, including the Hazel McCallion LRT.<\/p>\n
Plans are currently undergoing the Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process, a provincial approval process that includes public input and environmental considerations.<\/p>\n
The process is expected to be completed by the end of 2027 and the project would then move into design, positioning it for construction.<\/p>\n
\u201cMississauga acted early to help get more homes built and make them more affordable for our residents,\u201d said Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish. \u201cToday\u2019s announcement demonstrates the value of that leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funding is subject to the city signing a Canada-Ontario Build Communities Strong Fund bilateral agreement and Transfer Payment Agreement with the province, as well as further due diligence and confirmation of approved projects by both levels of government.<\/p>\n
