Though we may still be just shy of two months out from tip-off, and, as a result, a lot could change between now and the regular season, based on his showcased on-court performances thus far, it doesn’t seem all that far-fetched to expect Mara to receive minimal run during his rookie year, just like many of the recent first-round Thunder talents who came before.

Thunder big was a major disappointment in Summer League

Sadly, Mara’s play in the Summer League didn’t do him any favors when it comes to the idea of him potentially snapping this lackluster trend.

In just three games played, the 7-footer posted mere averages of 8.7 points and 7.7 rebounds, and was tabbed as the “most disappointing rookie” who took part in the annual offseason tournament by the folks at ESPN.

Now, while Summer League by no means provides the best representation of a player’s full potential at the next level, considering their impressive collection of talent already residing at the pivot in the likes of Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, Jaylin Williams, and possibly even Thomas Sorber, the Thunder could be enticed to have the majority of Mara’s extended action come down in the G League.

That is, of course, until he proves himself ready to be integrated into Oklahoma City’s varsity system.
