Holistic massage practitioners may soon need to pay annual fees and meet license requirements to work in Brampton under proposed bylaw changes.<\/p>\n
There are nearly 40 estimated \u201cholistic businesses\u201d operating in the city, with no guidelines or regulations for holistic centres, practitioners or massage services, according to a report going to a committee of Brampton City Council.<\/p>\n
And while a government licence may not be required for some holistic services, some municipalities like Mississauga and Toronto do have rules that say those practitioners who overlap with regulated health professions, like massage therapy, must meet the applicable provincial registration requirements.<\/p>\n
City staff have put forward a new licensing framework for holistic massage practitioners that could include a $217 annual fee and proof of general liability insurance coverage of at least $2 million.<\/p>\n
The proposed rules would also require holistic massage practitioners to be members of a professional association, like the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada, and to complete a recognized training program.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Licensing) will support health and safety, provide greater consistency in licensing requirements, and give the city authority to conduct compliance inspections to ensure businesses meet applicable standards and requirements,\u201d a city report reads.<\/p>\n
The requirements of the proposed bylaw would apply only to the rooms in a business or dwelling used for the purposes of providing holistic services, if the holistic services are provided in a part of a dwelling.<\/p>\n
The changes would generate \u201cincremental revenues\u201d of an estimated $8,246 every year, based on the 38 or so holistic business centres currently operating in Brampton, the report says. Revenue collected would be deposited into the Legislative Services Department, and staff will monitor revenue increases and recommend future budget changes.<\/p>\n
The proposed changes go to a committee of Brampton City Council for consideration next week.<\/p>\n
