Drivers treat it like a hybrid of a short track, intermediate oval and road course, thanks to its contrasting corners and heavy braking zones. That combination has historically rewarded organizations capable of adapting quickly, and several enter this weekend with compelling storylines.

At the forefront is Team Penske, which has won half of the four Cup Series races held at WWTR. Joey Logano captured the inaugural event in 2022 and Austin Cindric followed with a victory in 2024. Combined with Ryan Blaney, the trio has produced eight top-10 finishes in 12 starts at the facility.

Blaney enters the weekend third in the playoff standings and searching for a breakthrough at a track where he has repeatedly shown speed. Penske drivers have led 224 laps at WWTR, more than 23% of the laps run since NASCAR first visited the venue.

Just down the Ford camp ladder, the hottest driver in NASCAR may be Josh Berry. The Wood Brothers Racing driver has assembled six consecutive top-10 finishes, including a third-place run at New Hampshire and a seventh-place finish last weekend at Darlington. The streak has elevated expectations for a team that continues to gain confidence heading into the playoffs.

“The results lately are a reflection of how well everyone on this team is working together,” crew chief Miles Stanley said. “We’ve been unloading with solid speed, making the right adjustments throughout the weekend and putting ourselves in position late in these races.”

Stanley believes Penske’s success at Gateway provides a roadmap for the No. 21 team.

“We’ve seen what our teammates at Team Penske have been able to accomplish at Gateway, and we feel good about where our program is right now and the progress we continue to make each week,” he said.

Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs Racing arrives carrying significant momentum. Last week’s Darlington winner, Christopher Bell, cut deeply into the championship deficit and heads to a track where he has never finished worse than 11th in Cup competition. Bell led 80 laps at WWTR in 2024 before mechanical issues spoiled an apparent victory bid.

His teammate, championship leader Denny Hamlin, is the defending race winner and arguably the pre-race favorite after posting a win and two runner-up finishes in four WWTR starts. Hamlin also owns four victories on non-drafting ovals this season and continues to set the pace in the standings.

Among Chevrolet organizations, Spire Motorsports may bring the most intriguing playoff narrative. For the first time, the team has multiple drivers competing for a championship, with Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suárez both still alive in the Chase.

Hocevar’s connection to WWTR runs deeper than most. The track hosted his Cup Series debut in 2023 and remains one of his favorite stops.

“That track means a lot to me,” Hocevar said. “We’ve had a lot of speed and run well there in both trucks and a Cup car.”

Suárez expects the modified aero and engine package debuting this weekend to create uncertainty.

“It’s going to create some unknowns, and we’re excited for the challenge,” Suárez said. “I think it’s going to be important to adapt quickly.”

The new rules package has generated discussion throughout the garage. Drivers anticipate increased braking demands and more emphasis on managing corner entry and exit.

“Gateway is like a road course on an oval,” Cody Ware said. “You’re downshifting from fifth to third, which is something we don’t do anywhere else.”

Veteran AJ Allmendinger echoed that sentiment.

“I would say it’s probably one of the more unique racetracks that we go to,” Allmendinger said. “Turns 1 and 2 compared to Turns 3 and 4 are very different.”

MADISON, Ill. — As the NASCAR Cup Series postseason heads into its second race, World Wide Technology Raceway…

[446
49,48,634,82
post-892210","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nascar","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-nascar","tag-sports
["GET
