Those buyers, he says, are “flabbergasted.”

Trump signed five proclamations on Tuesday, banning import of alcoholic drinks and other goods as of Sept 29., and adding 50 per cent tariffs to others such as whey, molasses, furniture, and paper and wood products.

The move comes after twenty months of escalating trade action between Canada and the U.S.

Winery shipped early to beat latest tariffs

Niagara’s prominent wine industry is among those that will be affected by the alcohol import ban, which also targets beer, cider, whiskies, vodka and other spirits.

Pillitteri specializes in ice wine, which accounts for more than half of its wine sales, Slingerland said. The winery usually ships around 200,000 bottles of it to the U.S., representing about 17 per cent of overall sales.

“We like to look at ourselves as the world’s largest exporter of ice wine in the world,” Slingerland said, adding the product is a Niagara specialty.

Niagara Falls Tourism says the region is a top ice wine producer thanks to cold winters and a long growing season allowing for the production of the sweet beverage, made using grapes harvested in winter.

Knowing tariffs were coming, Slingerland said, the winery pivoted. Instead of preparing wine to export in the fall before the holiday shopping season, Pillitteri accelerated its schedule and exported four months early. Slingerland said their buyers are keeping the product in storage until closer to Christmas.

He said the family-owned winery was able to act quickly in part because it’s smaller and independent. Other wineries, he said, likely do not have that option.

“We’re not laying anybody off. We’re not reducing production. We’re pushing ahead,” Slingerland said.

WATCH | B.C. wine industry calls on Canadians to support local producers:

U.S. alcohol ban sets ‘dangerous precedent,’ B.C. wine industry warns | Hanomansing Tonight

The U.S. is set to ban imports of most Canadian alcohol starting Sept. 29 as the trade war with Canada escalates.
