The Surrey candidate nomination period ended 4 p.m. Friday (Sept. 11), signalling the official start of a civic election campaign involving a long list of people looking for votes over the next few weeks.

Named on surrey.ca/election, seven candidates are running for mayor in Surrey, 65 for city council and 23 for school board, as of Friday afternoon. The list is updated as nomination papers are processed.

Candidate profiles are posted along with contact information and other details.

Listed alphabetically, candidates for mayor in Surrey are Igal Ammons-II, Linda Annis, Brenda Locke, Doug McCallum, Honveer Singh Randhawa, Mike Starchuk and Troy Van-Vliet.

Surrey residents vote in the municipal election Oct. 17, when polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 52 voting locations in the city.

The quadrennial election (every four years) sees Surrey voters pick a mayor, eight city councillors and six school trustees, similar to civic elections in other B.C. cities that day.

Advance voting can be done Oct. 7, 10, 14 and 15 at 10 sites listed on surrey.ca. Bring ID and voter card, to be mailed in late September or early October. The Provincial Voters List from Elections BC is used to create Surrey’s list of eligible voters.

Accessible voting options are available including curbside voting at all locations and mail-in votes. Voters can use Surrey’s interactive voting locations map to find a site and view wait times.

Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade booked a series of all-candidate forums well ahead of the civic election this fall. Forums in White Rock are Sept. 21 (for council candidates) and Sept. 22 (mayor) at White Rock Community Centre. The Surrey-focused forums are Oct. 6 (council) and Oct. 7 (mayor) at Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel.
