Your parents worried about dying at 70. Your grandparents worried about it at 60. But in 2026, you should be worrying about something different: whether you’ll be around long enough for medicine that doesn’t exist yet that may make aging obsolete.

Whoa, I know. But this isn’t a joke. And it’s not science fiction wrapped in wellness marketing.

Ray Kurzweil, the futurist and tech entrepreneur who has an eerie track record of predicting technological breakthroughs, recently updated his prediction on what’s being called “longevity escape velocity.” His answer: people in reasonably good health will have access to it by 2030. That’s four years from now.

Magnific

Longevity escape velocity is a simple concept — medical breakthroughs could eventually extend your lifespan faster than aging.

For most people, that concept means nothing. Let me explain what it actually is, why some scientists are taking it seriously and why it should change how you think about your health right now.

● ● ●

Longevity escape velocity sounds like something from a Marvel movie, but the concept is simple: it’s the moment when medical breakthroughs extend your lifespan faster than you’re aging.

Right now, one year passes and you get one year older. Your body decays a little. Maybe you’re lucky and good lifestyle and medicine slows that decay. But you’re always fighting Father Time and he’s getting closer by the day.

At longevity escape velocity, the equation flips. One year passes, but medical treatments paired with lifestyle interventions repair more damage than time creates. You gain more than one year of life expectancy. Your biological clock doesn’t just slow down. It moves backward.

It sounds impossible. But it’s not impossible — it’s just never happened before. And the scientists studying aging don’t think it’s just theoretical anymore.

Aubrey de Grey, founder of the Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation, has been studying aging for 30 years. He doesn’t hedge his language. While he isn’t as bullish as Kurzweil, he puts the odds at 50 per cent that we’ll hit longevity escape velocity somewhere between 2030 and 2040.

George Church, a geneticist at Harvard, says similar timelines are realistic for people “in reasonably good shape with reasonable means.”

● ● ●

Here’s where the practical part kicks in, and it’s where I think most people get the conversation wrong.

Longevity medicine — the therapies being tested right now — doesn’t work in a vacuum. It works on a platform. And that platform is a body not broken beyond repair.

If you show up to these treatments obese, averaging five hours of sleep a night, sedentary and metabolically broken on the brink of diabetes, those treatments have less to work with. They can still help you, certainly. But they’re trying to reverse decades of neglect on a damaged foundation.

Maybe they’ll be able replace all the broken parts eventually, but I wouldn’t bank on that just yet. If you show up relatively healthy — strong, sleeping well, at a reasonable healthy weight, moving every day, no pre-existing major conditions — you’re in the sweet spot. Your body can actually respond to what these treatments are designed to do — supercharging a system that isn’t irreparable.

The research is clear on this, regardless where medical breakthroughs take us. Exercise extends life and improves metabolic health. Sleep is non-negotiable for cellular repair. Adequate protein paired with strength training preserves muscle and strength. Consistent movement touches nearly every system in your body. And eating the right amount prevents both the diseases of excess and the problems of chronic undereating.

These aren’t controversial points anymore. They’re just biology. But here’s what’s strange: knowing this doesn’t change most people’s behaviour. We all know we should sleep more, move more and eat right. And yet we don’t.

● ● ●

I think the reason is that the benefits feel abstract. “You’ll live longer” or “you’ll look better” or “you’ll have more energy”— these are real, but they’re not concrete enough to compete with the pizza tonight or the bedtime skipped because another episode of House of Dragon represents more enjoyment in the moment.

But longevity escape velocity is different. In as few as four years from now, there’s a non-trivial chance that real medicine will exist to slow and potentially reverse aging. Not magic. Just biotechnology that works. The drugs are being tested. The data is coming in. The companies are real. You’ve seen how fast AI is going and it’s playing a role here.

When that happens, the question won’t be “should I get in shape?” It’ll be “am I in shape enough to actually benefit from this?”

And that’s a question you can answer right now.

● ● ●

Kurzweil said “reasonably good shape.” De Grey said “reasonably good health.” What does that mean for someone living in Winnipeg, working a desk job, raising kids, juggling everything?

It doesn’t mean you need to be a CrossFit competitor or a marathon runner or have $100,000 to drop on the latest body scans and medical breakthroughs.

It means you weigh a reasonable amount for your height and frame. Not runway thin. Not obese. Just lean and relatively fit. For most adults, that’s somewhere in the BMI 20-27 range, but more importantly, you don’t have significant belly fat or signs of metabolic dysfunction.

You sleep 7-8 hours. Not most nights. Almost every night. Your immune system, your hormones, your ability to lose fat, your muscle recovery — all of it hinges on this.

You move. Eight thousand to 10,000 steps a day isn’t a fitness flex. It’s the baseline. It adds up fast if you walk to work, park farther away, take the stairs, play with your kids.

You have muscle. Not six-pack abs. Just evidence that you’ve lifted weights a few times a week. Muscle is the predictor of longevity. It’s also what dies fastest when you stop moving.

You eat enough protein and don’t overeat overall calories. Not a diet. Just awareness. You know roughly what you’re eating, you eat enough protein to preserve muscle and you don’t run a chronic calorie surplus that keeps weight creeping up.

That’s it. That’s “reasonably good health” in functional terms.

● ● ●

Here’s what I want you to understand: this isn’t manipulation dressed up as motivation. I’m not saying “get in shape or you’ll die.” You might die anyway. A bus could hit you next Tuesday. Accidents don’t care about your fitness level.

What I’m saying is this: we appear to be at an inflection point. Longevity medicine is moving from theoretical to real. The timelines are compressing. The scientists are confident. And for the first time in human history, the outcome of that medicine will partly depend on the condition your body is in right now.

If you’re 40, 50 or on the back nine on paper and enjoying a Manitoba summer right now, you might actually live long enough to see aging get solved. That’s a genuinely new thing to consider. It obviously creates some controversy — Do we even want to live that long? — but that’s a conversation for another day.

But here’s the catch: if you want to be in the pool of people who can access and benefit from these treatments, the window to build that foundation is now. Not eventually. Not next year. Now.

Because by the time longevity escape velocity arrives, it’ll be too late to start.

● ● ●

So what do you do with this?

You don’t start a fad diet or a brutal exercise program. Extremes don’t work and they’ll kill your adherence faster than anything else.

You make one move: you get serious about the basics. The stuff that actually works and actually lasts.

Eat the right amount of calories and protein for your body. Sleep 7-8 hours. Lift weights a few times a week. Move 8,000-plus steps on as many days as you can. Drink three litres of water.

 Winnipeg Free Press | Newsletter

That’s not revolutionary. That’s the opposite. It’s boring and so effective that we’ve kind of forgotten it’s the answer.

But if longevity escape velocity is real — and the evidence suggests it is — then the unglamourous basics are your ticket to the future where you get to choose how you age. That seems better than the alternative where our last decade of decay involves bed pans and microwavable meals on repeat.

You’ve got four to 10 years (if the experts are right) to put yourself in a position where you can actually make use of what’s coming.

Make them count.

Mitch Calvert is a Winnipeg-based fitness and nutrition coach who has worked with more than 2,000 Winnipeggers.
