We are working with our partners to continually review and improve the results.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition MLAs are expressing concern about the lack of progress on hospital projects in Cape Breton eight years after they were announced, just as the health minister says those plans are being reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>The former Liberal government announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/cape-breton-hospital-closure-1.4720484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a suite of health-care infrastructure projects for Cape Breton<\/a> in 2018, including upgrades to the hospital in Glace Bay and a replacement for the hospital in New Waterford.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years later, neither project has shovels in the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese projects should be under construction and almost completed,\u201d Liberal MLA Derek Mombourquette, a member of the former government that made the initial announcement, told reporters at Province House on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just shows the people of New Waterford and Glace Bay that their priorities don\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An aging facility<\/p>\n<p>New Democrat MLA Kendra Coombes, whose district includes New Waterford, said it feels like the government is wasting people\u2019s time as health-care challenges pile up.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital in New Waterford is deteriorating and faces issues with heating and cooling, she told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now my community is dealing with an aging hospital that is not meeting the full needs of my community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coombes said she\u2019s worried that the provincial government is backing away from its commitments.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Michelle Thompson told reporters that her government remains committed to health care in Cape Breton, but she also would not answer directly when asked if the plan remains for New Waterford to get a new hospital and Glace Bay the upgrades it was promised.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid building the wrong thing<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said the government plans to do consultation with members of the medical community and other stakeholders this fall and make decisions based on that feedback.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m not going to presuppose the outcome,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can say that the plans of 2018 are being reviewed, but that\u2019s not to say that we\u2019re removing anything \u2014 but it\u2019s also not to say that we\u2019re adding anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said much has changed since the plans were developed in 2018, and she noted her government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/emergency-rooms-hospital-redevelopment-halifax-infirmary-dartmouth-general-1.6654983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">also made changes to the plans the Liberals announced for the Halifax Infirmary<\/a> and Cape Breton Regional Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst thing we could do is build the wrong thing. So we\u2019re going to take a little bit of time. I don\u2019t want people to be alarmed, it\u2019s simply a pause.
