St. Albert\u2019s Bailey Books hosts\u00a0second-hand book sale on Sept. 7\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The printed word plays\u00a0a big\u00a0role\u00a0in our lives and now\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about to make the lives of farm animals more comfortable.\u00a0<\/p>\n
St. Albert\u2019s Bailey Books has partnered with Help a Buddy Fund to host a joint fundraiser of second-hand books\u00a0on Sept.\u00a07.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Help a Buddy is a St. Albert-based volunteer-run charity that hosts\u00a0fundraisers for animal shelters across the province.\u00a0Founded by close friends Jillanne Bowler-Veltman and Gennifer Reurink,\u00a0Help\u00a0a Buddy does not rescue animals. Instead, it fundraises and provides grants and donations to\u00a0established\u00a0rescues to cover veterinary bills and other necessities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI started volunteering with rescues in 2019,\u201d said Bowler-Veltman, board president. \u201cThat\u2019s\u00a0when I realized how much rescues do behind the scenes. Our mission is to support rescues financially and take away some of that hard\u00a0labour\u00a0of fundraising.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Bailey Books and Help a Buddy\u2019s upcoming book fundraiser will support Farm Animal Rescue and Rehoming Movement (FARRM). It is a compassionate non-profit sanctuary\u00a0located\u00a0near Wetaskiwin.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Operating since 2013,\u00a0the sanctuary\u00a0is committed to rescuing,\u00a0rehabilitating\u00a0and providing life-long care for animals that have been abused, abandoned or\u00a0are in need of special care.\u00a0<\/p>\n
FARRM offers animals\u00a0a safe haven. Many arrive with special needs or have endured past traumas, neglect or genetic conditions that make them more vulnerable.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAll animals deserve an equal chance. We hear stories of what happens to animals when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0unwanted.\u00a0Rather than send them to the slaughterhouse, FARRM does really great work.\u00a0They take in severe medical cases and rehabilitate them. It tugs at my heart,\u201d Bowler-Veltman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
One successful pairing is Gordo, the pig,\u00a0and Jade the cat. Gordo arrived at FARRM suffering seizures, an inflamed heart valve and stunted growth. He was treated and today is best\u00a0buddies\u00a0with Jade, a cat who wandered onto the property and gave birth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fawn, a goat, was transferred from a partner agency. She suffered severe frostbite on her ears and hind legs. Following multiple surgeries, she relies on a\u00a0custom-built\u00a0mobility chair.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For Lisa and Barry Bailey, owners of Bailey Books, donating space to support the fundraiser was a given.\u00a0Both are \u201cpassionate\u201d animal lovers\u00a0who have\u00a0sheltered\u00a0a string of greyhound retirees, chihuahuas and cats in their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0happy to work with Help a Buddy on this fundraiser. A lot of animal shelters struggle to stay afloat with veterinary bills, food, housing\u00a0\u2013 especially where larger animals are housed,\u201d said Lisa Bailey.\u00a0<\/p>\n
From Aug. 24 to Sept. 5, the community is invited to donate their second-hand books to support the fundraiser.\u00a0Books can be dropped off at 29B Rowland Crescent in St. Albert.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this moment, we have no idea what to expect. But\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0open to what people bring. Our goal is to get sellable\u00a0adult,\u00a0youth\u00a0and children\u2019s\u00a0books.\u00a0We\u00a0are not accepting textbooks, encyclopedias, cookbooks, magazines, National\u00a0Geographic\u00a0or extremely damaged books,\u201d Bailey said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Donated books will be priced at $10 per book or $25 for three.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe already have a lot of people who are expecting to donate.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0nice to see the community stepping up and getting involved in a fundraiser.\u00a0Our goal that day\u00a0is\u00a0to sell Help a Buddy\u2019s books, not ours.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Following the on-site book sale on Sept. 7 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Help a Buddy will be hosting an online book sale from Sept. 11 to 20 for readers who were unable to attend the earlier sale.\u00a0<\/p>\n
