The 255 remnants were uncovered north of El Calafate in Argentina, approximately 68 million years ago, and constitute the most definitive dinosaur egg remains found in the southern hemisphere. According to the newly published study by The Royal Society Open Science, the microscopic pores in the eggshells provide evidence of how the giant dinosaurs could keep their offspring warm.

Eggshells at the End of the World

The collection of the egg fragments took place during research campaigns in 2020 and 2024, at the site of the Magallanodon located within the Chorrillo Formation, in Santa Cruz Province. During the Late Cretaceous, this riverine area was situated at an approximate latitude of 55 to 60 degrees south, a latitude characterized by milder climate but with long periods of absence of sunlight. The shells turned out to belong to a type of fossilized egg called Fusioolithus and were probably produced by titanosaurs, however no complete egg or embryo was found. The discovery complements evidence that dinosaur eggshells can preserve their own geological clock.

A group of fossilized titanosaur eggs. (Darla Zelenitsky/Royal Society Open Science)

The site is located approximately 29 km (18 miles) to the southeast of El Calafate and features a previously waterlogged or marshy plain. The same formation also contains Titanosaur bones and teeth as well as fossils believed to belong to the giant Nullotitan glaciaris, although researchers are currently unable to link the eggshells to any specific species. Nevertheless, the find adds to what is known of the nesting range of dinosaurs known to weigh as much as 75 tonnes.

Porous Shells Point to Buried Nests

The surfaces of the eggshells have pores which allow the embryo to ventilate meaning they can exchange gases with the outside world. Kohei Tanaka and his associates employed microscopes and micro-computed tomography techniques on the Chorrillo samples and found a pore density matching eggs situated under nesting material. An exposed egg with such porous shell would lose water dangerously fast, while burial in damp soil or vegetation would retain moisture. The evidence therefore places these titanosaur eggs in covered nests rather than open nests.

The Chorrillo eggshell’s outer surface and internal structure under micro-CT, electron microscopy and polarized light. When broken down, microbes produce heat in the same manner as they do in the mound nests of modern crocodilians and megapode birds, while the level of sunlight in this latitude means that solar incubation is much less effective. As study co-author Darla Zelenitsky explained to CNN, an adult titanosaur trying to sit on the eggs would have transformed the nest into “one giant omelette.”

Pores in a thin section of eggshell and a comparison placing the Chorrillo material among covered nesters. Also, scientists cannot prove yet whether decay processes caused heating, but the study says this is the most likely explanation since the average temperature of the environment was about 12–14.5 C (54–58 F) and no signs of geothermal activity have been found. The absence of complete titanosaur eggs or intact nests means that the mound represents a reconstruction.

Still, the discovery adds a new chapter to dinosaur reproduction, alongside an embryo curled inside a 72-million-year-old egg and an adult dinosaur fossilized over its clutch. A related titanosaur hatchery in India reveals communal nesting on a vast scale, while the Chorrillo fragments show that the strategy also worked at the chilly southern edge of the dinosaurs’ world. Tiny pieces of shell have therefore widened the known range – and the ingenuity – of Earth’s biggest land animals.

Top image: Representational image of dinosaur eggs. Source: KtD / Adobe Stock

By Gary Manners

References

Hunt, K. 8 September 2026.
