Long known as a global hotbed for basketball and soccer talent, Brampton is also rewriting the playbook on the gridiron. As the 2026 NFL regular season kicked into high gear, two of the city\u2019s finest \u2014 Joshua Palmer and John Metchie III \u2014 stepped onto football\u2019s biggest stage, proving once again that the road to the pros runs right through Peel Region.<\/p>\n
For Palmer, a 26-year-old wide receiver who signed a marquee three-year, $36-million deal with the Buffalo Bills this past off-season, Week 1 delivered a strong season debut as Palmer wasted no time making his presence felt.<\/p>\n
In a thrilling 36-31 opening victory over the Houston Texans, the explosive wideout hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Allen.<\/p>\n
The two receivers share a history that dates back long before the bright lights of the National Football League. In fact, both players got their start as 6-year-olds strapped into shoulder pads for the legendary Brampton Bulldogs of the Brampton Minor Football Association. Palmer and Metchie even shared the field on the same kids\u2019 team, coached by Palmer\u2019s father, Keith.<\/p>\n
Palmer initially made a name for himself locally at St. Roch Catholic Secondary School, dominating in football, basketball, and track. Recognizing his immense potential, he made a bold \u201cbusiness move\u201d at age 15, relocating to Florida\u2019s powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School to attract Division I eyes. It paid off. Palmer starred at the University of Tennessee before being drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers, where he spent four productive seasons.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Metchie\u2019s journey is the stuff of cinema. Born in Taiwan and raised in Ghana, his family eventually settled in Brampton, where his football obsession took root.<\/p>\n
Like Palmer, Metchie moved south for high school, later joining the legendary Alabama Crimson Tide. He became the first unanimous winner of the Jon Cornish Trophy as the top Canadian in NCAA football and won a national championship before being selected in the second round of the 2022 draft. After courageously overcoming a leukemia diagnosis that sidelined his rookie year, Metchie is embarking on a fresh chapter this season after signing a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers.<\/p>\n
Though Metchie, also 26, was a coach\u2019s decision inactive for Carolina\u2019s Week 1 opener against the Chicago Bears, his time is expected to come.<\/p>\n
