The WNBA is set to undergo some changes this offseason. <\/p>\n
Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that she is retiring <\/a>at the end of the season, and she has been in the role since 2019. <\/p>\n On Monday, Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham spoke about what she wants in the league\u2019s next commissioner and had one request. <\/p>\n \u201cThe #WNBA has always been a place for people to feel safe\/comfortable. I think there are all types of walks in this league,\u201d Cunningham said, via James Boyd of The Athletic.<\/a> \u201cYou need someone who\u2019s gonna unite everybody b\/c it can be so different.\u201d<\/p>\n Cunningham even said she talked to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver about the matter, but she didn\u2019t have any candidates in mind herself. <\/p>\n #Fever<\/a>\u2019s Sophie Cunningham, asked if she has any candidates for the next #WNBA<\/a> commissioner:<\/p>\n \u201cGod no. \u2026 I have talked to (#NBA<\/a> commissioner) Adam Silver a couple times \u2026 I think he\u2019s gonna put someone in place who really wants to even take our league to another level \u2026\u201d https:\/\/t.co\/BkalbeuyYC<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 James Boyd (@RomeovilleKid) September 14, 2026<\/a> <\/p>\n Before Engelbert\u2019s announcement, Cunningham floated the idea of a new Commissioner <\/a>coming into the league. It comes at a time full of scrutiny, with Cunningham\u2019s comments opening the way for Enes Kanter and others to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft<\/a>, although the league said it wouldn\u2019t happen. <\/p>\n
