\n\tMichael J. Fox<\/a>\u2018s heartfelt speech at the Emmys<\/a> earned a huge ovation as he accepted the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award on Monday night. The five-time Emmy winner was recognized for his \u201ctransformative contributions to Parkinson\u2019s disease research and advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFox said during his speech, which was intro-ed by his \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d co-star Julianna Margulies, \u201cThank you to everyone involved with the Television Academy for this amazing, humbling honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe spoke about the award\u2019s namesake, Bob Hope, and the entertainer\u2019s tireless dedication to helping people. \u201cI learned from his example. I couldn\u2019t have known how these lessons would resonate in my own life, until my late 20s, when my life handed me a role I wasn\u2019t looking for. Initially I kept my Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis a secret. I worried it would affect my work and relationships with audiences. Would they laugh if they knew I was sick? I was stunned by the support from all of you, so uplifted and I hadn\u2019t lost what I do. They couldn\u2019t take it away from me. And it\u2019s because you stood up for me. \u2026 I understood that accepting Parkinson\u2019s didn\u2019t mean I had to surrender to it. It just meant I had to do everything I could for everyone living with this disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI set out to advocate for Parkinson\u2019s disease and raise money,\u201d he continued. \u201cI found people to lead the effort for me and vowed to fund the best science in the world. I\u2019m proud of the progress we\u2019ve made to benefit Parkinson\u2019s patients and families. We move closer to eradicating this disease forever. I\u2019m deeply grateful to our staff, donors, researchers, and most of all the patient community who make our work at the Michael J. Fox foundation possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFox went on to thank his wife, the rest of his family and Bob Hope, for \u201cshowing me how it\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFox was also nominated for guest actor in a comedy series for an appearance on \u201cShrinking,\u201d though Rob Reiner ended up winning the trophy posthumously. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cFamily Ties\u201d star launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson\u2019s Research in 2000 after disclosing his diagnosis of Parkinson\u2019s in 1991 at the age of 29. <\/p>\n

\n\tOprah Winfrey was the first to win the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, which was first given in 2002. The award was created \u201cto honor a member of the telecommunications industry whose philanthropic efforts exemplify Bob Hope\u2019s own decades-long altruism and positive impact on society.\u201d Last year\u2019s Bob Hope honor went to Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe honoree is selected by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation to find a person whose \u201chumanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry and whose deeds and actions have had a lasting impact on society.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Michael J.
