{"id":896357,"date":"2026-09-15T07:00:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T07:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/896357\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T07:00:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T07:00:12","slug":"nhs-to-roll-out-at-home-hpv-cervical-screenings-in-wolverhampton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/896357\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS to roll out at-home HPV cervical screenings in Wolverhampton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Women in Wolverhampton who have not attended cervical screening appointments are to be offered home testing for human papillomavirus (HPV). <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The NHS is rolling out the self-testing kits to increase screening numbers, with data suggesting about a third of women are not up to date with appointments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">HPV is a common virus and some high-risk types can cause changes to cells in the cervix, which can develop into cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Eligible women will be able to order a free self-testing kit online through the NHS app. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The kit contains a swab which is used to collect a sample at home before it is posted off for testing free of charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">If high-risk HPV is detected, the person will be invited to book a follow-up appointment at their GP surgery or a sexual health clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Cellular change linked to HPV can usually be treated before cancer develops, said Obaida Ahmed, City of Wolverhampton Council&#8217;s cabinet member for health, wellbeing and community, who added: &#8220;Two women die every day from cervical cancer in England, yet it is one of the most preventable cancers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Women aged 24 to 64 are invited for cervical screening every five years or more frequently if HPV is detected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The HPV self-testing scheme is being introduced in phases across England, initially targeting women aged 30 to 65 who have not attended cervical screening after previous invitations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Women in Wolverhampton who have not attended cervical screening appointments are to be offered home testing for human&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":896358,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[49,48,84],"class_list":["post-896357","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/896357","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=896357"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/896357\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/896358"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=896357"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=896357"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=896357"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
