The City of Brampton has launched a 10-point plan to help local businesses respond to U.S. tariffs, with measures focused on Canadian procurement, manufacturing, technology adoption, investment and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The plan includes three priorities: Protect, Compete and Build.<\/p>\n
\u201cBrampton is a manufacturing powerhouse and a critical part of Canada\u2019s economy. We will continue to stand up for our workers, businesses and Canadian jobs as U.S. tariffs create new challenges for industries across the country,\u201d said Mayor Patrick Brown.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur 10-point plan is about taking action now while building for the future by putting Canadian businesses first, opening new markets for Brampton companies and attracting investment that creates good jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Under the Protect priority, Brampton will strengthen its Canadian-first procurement policies to give Canadian companies greater opportunities to compete for municipal contracts.<\/p>\n
The city will review existing contracts to identify exit or termination clauses and, where feasible, replace U.S. suppliers with Canadian alternatives for major public-sector purchases. It is also encouraging Peel Region and other public-sector organizations to take similar steps.<\/p>\n
Brampton will advocate for federal and provincial procurement opportunities that can support domestic manufacturing and local supply chains, including defence contracts and government vehicle fleets.<\/p>\n
The city will also seek new federal defence procurement opportunities for Brampton companies in the aerospace, defence and space sectors.<\/p>\n
A business concierge service will be established through the Brampton Economic Development Office and the Brampton Business Growth Accelerator. Supported by $2.5 million from the federal Regional Tariff Response Initiative, the service will help tariff-affected companies access government programs and funding, develop new products and markets and connect with industry expertise.<\/p>\n
The Compete priority focuses on productivity, technology and market diversification.<\/p>\n
Through the BNext AI Program, the city will partner with the BHive Innovation & Training Hub to help businesses adopt automation, artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies. The program is supported by $2.7 million through the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative.<\/p>\n
The city says the program will help companies reduce costs, improve productivity and develop higher-value products and services.<\/p>\n
Brampton also plans to expand its GO GLOBAL Brampton export program, which has already engaged 310 businesses in export-readiness training. The initiative will help manufacturers and exporters pursue markets in Europe, Asia, Mexico and elsewhere in Canada through trade missions, delegations and other targeted opportunities.<\/p>\n
The city also plans to launch the Invest Brampton campaign in conjunction with the Canada Investment Summit, promoting the city as a location for companies looking to invest and expand.<\/p>\n
Advanced manufacturing, innovation, AI, life sciences, logistics and global trade will be among the sectors highlighted as part of the campaign.<\/p>\n
The Build priority includes measures aimed at supporting development and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Brampton will help businesses and development projects identify and combine eligible municipal, provincial and federal incentives and funding programs. The city says this could reduce project costs and help accelerate business expansion and development.<\/p>\n
Infrastructure investment is another key component.<\/p>\n
The city plans to advance approved infrastructure projects and continue working with government partners on projects supporting population growth, goods movement, business expansion and access to employment.<\/p>\n
The final point calls for greater cross-border advocacy. Brampton plans to engage U.S. elected officials, business and industry leaders and communities to build support for open trade and reduced trade barriers.<\/p>\n
The city says the campaign will emphasize the economic ties between Canada and the United States and the potential impact of tariffs on jobs, businesses and investment on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n
