NAB\u2019s new filing with the FCC comes on the heels of TV station group giant <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/nexstar\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nexstar\" data-tag=\"nexstar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nexstar<\/a>\u2018s announcement earlier this week of its <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/nexstar-acquires-tegna-1236492664\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/nexstar-acquires-tegna-1236492664\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intention to acquire competitor Tegna<\/a> and amid regulation changes being considered by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNAB says the request made to the FCC \u201cemphasized that the decades-old rule prevents local stations from achieving the scale needed to compete with global tech and streaming giants like Google\/YouTube, Amazon, Meta and Netflix \u2013 none of which face similar restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUnder the current FCC 39% ownership-cap rule, the Nexstar-<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tegna\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tegna\" data-tag=\"tegna\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tegna<\/a> deal would not be allowed. FCC\u00a0chairman\u00a0Brendan Carr, speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference this past May, reiterated his call for\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fcc-brendan-carr-constrain-network-power-1236387349\/\">the FCC to reform what he called \u201carcane artificial limits\u201d on TV station ownership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a statement to Variety Friday, Senator Elizabeth Warren opposed the Nexstar-Tegna deal and NAB\u2019s request for the FCC to abolish the rule that would prevent it from going through: \u201cExcept for corporate executives, no one is asking for giant companies like Nexstar to gobble up more local news stations, fire reporters, and jack up prices for Americans. Rules exist that protect consumers by prohibiting megadeals like this one and preventing companies from exercising monopoly power \u2014 and the government must enforce those rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNAB claims \u201cthere is no credible justification for preserving an analog-era rule that no longer aligns with how Americans consume media or how advertising markets function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis filing reflects an extraordinary level of consensus across America\u2019s broadcasters,\u201d NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt said in a statement. \u201cThe message is clear: it is time to eliminate the outdated national TV ownership cap. Broadcasters are united in calling on the FCC to level the playing field and give local stations a fair shot to compete, invest in journalism and continue providing our communities with trusted news and public safety information.
