\n\tIt\u2019s a strange time to interview Zack Snyder<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe previous evening, his new film \u201cThe Last Photograph<\/a>\u201d premiered to a packed house at the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>. Produced by his wife Deborah, adapted from a screenplay by longtime collaborator Kurt Johnstad (\u201c300\u201d), and directed by Snyder, the action-thriller follows a former DEA operative (Stuart Martin, a dead ringer for Hugh Jackman) who navigates a hellish unnamed South American country in search of his missing niece and nephew after their parents are brutally murdered. He\u2019s joined by a battle-scarred, heroin-shooting war photographer (Fra Fee) who witnessed the killings. Snyder has been planning to make the film since the aughts \u2014 Christian Bale and Sean Penn were attached to star at one point \u2014 and shot it in 32 days, mostly in Colombia<\/a>. He contracted COVID during production and was running a 100-degree fever but soldiered through. It\u2019s finally here.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd it\u2019s getting killed online. Snyder is used to charged discourse surrounding his films, but this time feels different. It\u2019s a smaller film made independently that feels like his way of processing the death of his daughter Autumn, an aspiring writer who took her own life in 2017. Snyder and Deborah subsequently left \u201cJustice League\u201d<\/a> during post-production to grieve, only to have Joss Whedon step in<\/a> and make major changes to the movie, leading to allegations of misconduct. Snyder\u2019s army of fans rather loudly demanded for the \u201cSnyder Cut,\u201d<\/a> and, well, you know the rest.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhich brings us to the interview. It\u2019s the morning after the premiere and I\u2019m sitting across from Snyder in the lobby of his Toronto hotel. He seems remarkably sanguine given the backlash to his long-gestating passion project, and ready to speak his mind.<\/p>\n

\t\tIt\u2019s taken a long time for \u201cThe Last Photograph\u201d to come to fruition.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt did! It\u2019s been, like, two decades. It would be one thing if it was two decades where we had done nothing else, and the truth is that most of the things that we\u2019ve done have stopped us more than anything. I think we were working on this before \u201c300.\u201d The reality of how we did it this time is, we had a hole in the schedule and there\u2019s another script I wrote, \u201cIllusions,\u201d based on the Richard Bach book. We were like, \u201cShould we make \u2018Illusions\u2019 or should we make \u2018The Last Photograph?\u2019 How should we do this?\u201d And then we went, \u201cLet\u2019s do \u2018The Last Photograph.\u2019\u201d And the window was small. We shot this in 32 days. The thing that I credit most is the team and our own skillset of being able to mount it and do it quickly with no money.<\/p>\n

\t\tAnd it is a very dark film.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s a deadly serious movie, but on the other hand, if you\u2019ve seen my movies, I\u2019m in love with kitsch, and the highest-art version of kitsch, and I don\u2019t think I ever escape that. As a filmmaker, I never try to escape that \u2014 even in a work like this. I am being earnest but I\u2019m always self-aware, and I have a hard time with straight drama without the melodramatic side, which to me is the interesting side. I\u2019m always self-aware of the fact that it is a movie about a thing about a thing. I\u2019m never not having a conversation in my mind about the fact that, \u201cOh, the audience is watching these two actors talk about a thing that never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tThis does feel like a personal film for you since it\u2019s ultimately about a father traveling through hell to save his daughter.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI think it was very affected by what I\u2019ve been through. The story changed a little bit and I can\u2019t help it; that\u2019s just going to get in there. I can\u2019t say exactly what it all means in the end other than I do think there\u2019s some catharsis in the process of examining it. Without setting out to give myself a therapy session, I think that happens and that\u2019s real.<\/p>\n

\t\tDoes that make you a composite of your two leads \u2014 the father who is numb to the world and the photographer who is also numb to the world but feels compelled to document it?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tFor sure. Look, I\u2019m famously surrounded by a particular discourse that happens around my movies. It\u2019s incredibly charged. And I thought, for the smallest of moments, that because it\u2019s a small movie and it\u2019s really not that big of a deal, that it\u2019d be allowed to exist on whatever level it is. What kind of noise does a tiny movie like this warrant from the world?<\/p>\n

\t\tHave you been paying attention to the noise?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah. This morning, I woke up to my X feed, and the discourse is incredibly energized by this battle. It\u2019s like there\u2019s a war going on \u2014 instantly \u2014 and on one hand, I don\u2019t want to say it\u2019s cool, but it has to exist in some ways. I don\u2019t know why. The amount of energy and the amount of vitriol I find really incredible. \u201cI want to kill Zack Snyder.\u201d \u201cZack Snyder is a fascist.\u201d \u201cZack Snyder is a homophobe.\u201d \u201cZack Snyder is a bisexual.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tBisexual? Because the two lead actors are buff and shirtless a lot?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI guess! It\u2019s \u201chomoerotic\u201d and \u201ctransphobic\u201d and \u201cfascist\u201d and all these things.<\/p>\n

\t\tThe most common criticism I\u2019ve seen is that there is a lot of violence and brutality toward women in the film and that it was excessive, which has led to accusations of misogyny being leveled against you. What do you say to that?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI mean, I don\u2019t know. First of all, I would argue that the violence toward women and men is equal and that nobody is spared \u2014 men, women, children, everybody. The justice that\u2019s doled out in the movie is in the same way that a hurricane doles out justice. To try and superimpose morality over it and want the violence to mean something \u2014 the meaning is that violence doesn\u2019t work and doesn\u2019t get anything done.<\/p>\n

\t\tAre you inured to online criticism at this point or does it still get to you?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tWe\u2019re all human. I guess in my feed, and this is just what my algorithm shows me, it\u2019s a conversation. Even though I think it started out, \u201cZack Snyder sucks!\u201d \u201cFuck him!\u201d \u201cYou fascist!\u201d What happens now is, \u201cYou guys are fucking crazy. This is just a movie. Calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\t\tDo you think this is more about people\u2019s preexisting feelings about you going into the movie?\t<\/p>\n

\n\t100%. There were only 1,200 people in the theater and there are thousands of comments! There was one I was reading where it was a guy who clipped it and said, \u201cI haven\u2019t seen it yet but I\u2019m sure it was horrible.\u201d And look: Whether you like the movie or not, I\u2019m not even commenting on that; but with me, it\u2019s more clickable to say, \u201cI hate Zack Snyder! He\u2019s a fascist!\u201d than it is to say, \u201cI saw the movie and it was cool.\u201d Nobody gives a fuck about that. And obviously, I\u2019m not a fascist.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen we showed \u201c300\u201d at the Berlin Film Festival this exact same thing happened. There was immediate discourse around the movie, and everyone booed and walked out. It was our first time showing the movie and we were like, \u201cWhat the fuck.\u201d They were saying it was \u201ca disaster,\u201d \u201cthe worst movie ever\u201d and a \u201cfascist\u201d movie. Then we had a press conference where they were asking me all these questions, like, \u201cAre you a fascist filmmaker?\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tIn Berlin.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Berlin! Classic. Maybe they\u2019re a little more sensitive. The hallmark question was when one of the guys said, \u201cAre you pro-gay or pro-NRA? Which are you?\u201d And I said, \u201cLook, I\u2019ll be honest: I\u2019m a tiny bit of both.\u201d But obviously I\u2019m pro-gay. I made the gayest movie ever made.<\/p>\n

\t\tYou think \u201c300\u201d is the gayest movie ever made?\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c300\u201d is one of the gayest movies ever made. I always go, \u201cLook, there are few movies where people come in straight and come out gay, and \u2018300\u2019 is one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tChristopher Nolan is a big admirer of \u201c300.\u201d Did he consult you on \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d at all?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tNo. He doesn\u2019t work like that. But he showed me the movie early and I loved it. It\u2019s amazing and really fun.<\/p>\n

\t\tJames Cameron is also a fan and has praised you in the past as a guy who\u2019s \u201ccreating their own cinematic language.\u201d Given that, how do you feel about AI? Because that\u2019s a technology that remixes it.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tMy current rules on AI are that I\u2019m very adamant that the shots are made by a person \u2014 the framing, the composition. I don\u2019t want AI making shots. And I\u2019m very adamant that the people are people \u2014 real humans \u2014 in the shot. The film I just made is the furthest thing from AI. There\u2019s dirt in the film. The problem is, when you\u2019re into the VFX pipelines now, who knows what\u2019s happening back there. In the creation of images, there\u2019s going to be a lot of crossover in the VFX world between CGI and AI. That line is getting blurrier and blurrier. If we were shooting this [points to table], having AI take that plant out? Pretty fucking easy. Anybody can do it. If you and I are still you and I in the shot, did that happen in the backrooms of some visual effects company that I don\u2019t know about? Possibly. But don\u2019t change the people. That\u2019s the line, for me \u2014 the people have to be real.<\/p>\n

\t\tBecause then it truly lacks humanity if there aren\u2019t actual humans in it.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s the slippery slope. Once you accept that, then you\u2019ll accept anything, and then certain movies are dead. We know that there are backrooms visual effects pipelines where we make a shot and then I go, \u201cOh, it would be cool if there was a CG lamp on the table.\u201d They say, \u201cSure,\u201d and give it to the visual effects company. It comes back and we go, \u201cGood work. But how exactly did you do that?\u201d And they say, \u201cOh, we did a CG model, we did texturing, we shot some photographs.\u201d And I say, \u201cOh, that\u2019s the old CG pipeline. That sounds good.\u201d But do I know that\u2019s true? No, I don\u2019t. So there\u2019s the reality of where we are right now, which is, it costs a lot to make that CG lamp the old way, but how much does it cost to put an AI lamp there that looks basically the same? Very little. Maybe they charge me the same! I don\u2019t know. And I don\u2019t know this for a fact, but that must be happening because of the economics. Do you say, \u201cI won\u2019t drive that car because it was built by a robot?\u201d Or does it feel the same as if it were built by a person?<\/p>\n

\t\tI\u2019m curious what you think about the pending takeover of your old studio, Warner Bros., by Paramount Skydance. It\u2019s something a lot of people in the industry are worried about. The immediate effect will surely be a massive loss of jobs, but we are also seeing power being consolidated.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tLook, I don\u2019t 100% have an opinion. I haven\u2019t talked to Larry [Ellison] and don\u2019t know what the Ellisons want to do, really. I would love to have a conversation with them. I know they value the brand and Warner Bros. is one of the great cinematic brands of all time. To have a movie with a Warner Bros. shield on the front of it means something.<\/p>\n

\t\t\u201cCasablanca.\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt means something. And most of my movies have that logo on it. So, it\u2019s hard for me to say. I can\u2019t sit here and say, \u201cI\u2019m mad because they\u2019re going to fuck it up!\u201d Maybe I\u2019m an optimist or maybe I\u2019m a na\u00efve idiot, but the reality is I think they love movies, and I would hope that people that love movies understand the value of Warner Bros. And they own another studio with an amazing moniker: Paramount.<\/p>\n

\t\t\u201cThe Godfather.\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIndiana Jones.\u201d So, that\u2019s my hope. Maybe I\u2019m an optimist and I\u2019m an idiot.<\/p>\n

\t\tI\u2019ve interviewed people about getting fired before. I once spoke with Adam Sandler here at TIFF about being fired from \u201cSNL\u201d and Drake opened up to me about being fired from his show \u201cDegrassi.\u201d How do you feel about having the DC superhero universe taken from you when you\u2019d made quite a bit of money for the studio?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThe circumstances around it were so particular. It just kind of crawled over me. What was happening with me and my family was so intense.<\/p>\n

\t\tAnd to have this be added to it.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was so loud \u2014 that part was so loud \u2014 that, in retrospect, asking, \u201cHow\u2019s the movie going?\u201d And they go, \u201cOh, it\u2019s fine! They\u2019re doing some reshoots.\u201d And I go, \u201cOh, OK. Fuck it.\u201d So, Debbie went and watched the Joss [Whedon] version of the movie, and to have her come back to me and say, \u201cYou can never see that movie,\u201d and to realize then that it was 60 pages of rewrites that they did for it\u2026 I\u2019ve never seen the movie, so I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

\t\tYou\u2019ve never seen Joss\u2019 version?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019ve never seen it. There was a point when the movie was released that was a low point for me because the pile-on effect was so insane. Not only did I lose my daughter, but also they\u2019ve released this version of the movie that I had nothing to do with and my name is on a movie that I didn\u2019t make.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\tWere you like, \u201cWhat else?!\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat else!\u201d Literally. But there was this catharsis of, I met with this executive at Warner Bros. who\u2019s long gone since \u2014 I won\u2019t say who it was \u2014 and he said to me, \u201cYou know, Zack, I\u2019ve got to tell you one thing: You were right about everything.\u201d And I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s kind of you.\u201d And he goes, \u201cWe were fighting you, and in the end you were right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tWhat were they fighting you on?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThe whole vision for the DC universe and the way I made movies and everything. They did this attempt to control it \u2014 and I\u2019m just talking about the regime that was there that\u2019s no longer there. They had this massive IP that\u2019s worth a ton and I can understand wanting to protect it as best they could since all their jobs depended on it working, and they\u2019d put it in the hands of a madman \u2014 or so they thought \u2014 so the part of them thinking that, and this is going to sound horrible, \u201cThis thing that happened to Zack is a window for us to take the movie back now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tIt\u2019s unfortunate that that\u2019s the way some people in the industry think.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah. But the catharsis of being able to finish it, and do it my way, was amazing. I can\u2019t walk down the street without having people come up to me and say, \u201cThank god for that movie.\u201d And it\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n

\t\tI do want to know what your thoughts are on the current state of the DC Universe. Have you seen \u201cSuperman\u201d or \u201cSupergirl\u201d?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI haven\u2019t seen the movies. It\u2019s a little bit too personal for me. Too soon, I guess you could say. I do like James [Gunn]. And I do have an appreciation for his [vision].<\/p>\n

\t\tHe consulted with you on Superman\u2019s suit, right?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tHe asked me a question about the underwear. You know, I can\u2019t even remember now, but I think it was about the underwear. Sorry, but I\u2019m going to do a little diatribe. \u201cWatchmen\u201d is a superhero deconstruction film \u2014 neuroses, sexual impotence around their costumes, the fetishism, everything. You can\u2019t undo that. I think about everything that way. So, the underwear on the outside of the superhero costume comes from Victorian strongmen. The Victorians were so prudish that they\u2019d wear flesh-colored leotards and then put the underwear over it. That\u2019s how it started. It was really just a reflection of the Victorians not wanting to show any real skin due to their prudish fear of nakedness. So to me, that\u2019s such a dinosaur. We don\u2019t feel that way anymore. We live in an era where we\u2019re OK without putting the underwear on. But maybe we\u2019re not OK! Maybe the message is that you put the underwear back on Superman because we haven\u2019t moved on from our Victorian prudishness. But I thought we had!<\/p>\n

\t\tThere is sex in your movie and there isn\u2019t a lot of sex in movies anymore.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThis is one of my big things: Sex in movies is weirdly gone. I don\u2019t understand it.<\/p>\n

\t\tAnd there\u2019s plenty of sex on TV, but not in movies.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd it\u2019s on TV! TV shows can have sex but movies, for whatever reason, can\u2019t. What happened? I\u2019m an \u201880s kid and grew up with \u201cBody Heat,\u201d \u201c9 \u00bd Weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tI\u2019m a \u201890s kid and grew up with \u201cBasic Instinct\u201d and \u201cThe Last Seduction\u201d and \u201cWild Things.\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tEroticism in movies has somehow been stomped out, and I don\u2019t understand it. We watched \u201cExcalibur\u201d the other day and it\u2019s a very sexy movie. It\u2019s erotic.<\/p>\n

\t\tMake Hollywood Movies Sexy Again.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tMake them sexy again! I couldn\u2019t agree more. I don\u2019t know why TV gets a pass.<\/p>\n

\t\t\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d had so much sex that it coined the term \u201csexposition.\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tCrazy sex. Crazy sex.<\/p>\n

\t\tIs it the MPAA?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI don\u2019t know what it is. You know what needs to happen? The same thing that happened with the R-rated movie. So, R-rated movies now have lost their stigma \u2014 \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d \u201cObsession,\u201d whatever it is. Now, we need an NC-17 movie that\u2019s a hit.<\/p>\n

\t\t\u201cCrash,\u201d but make it a hit.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIf we had an erotic thriller that was NC-17 and it was in IMAX and everyone had to just go do it, maybe that would lift the stigma.<\/p>\n

\t\tI love that idea.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI was pitching to Debbie how I\u2019d love to do an erotic anthology for a streamer. It\u2019s missing. Like \u201cLove Death + Robots\u201d but live action and just erotic stories. The thing that porn has done, which I think is a service, is it\u2019s taken all the mythology out of sex. It just shows the thing with no mythology or drama. But sex has the ability to have huge mythology and drama. It\u2019s one of the driving forces of our existence, but somehow, we just bash it down and don\u2019t think about it and do all these dances around it. With \u201cEuphoria\u201d and \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d and all these shows, TV knows that if you use sex to heighten the drama, it\u2019s a holy grail because they\u2019re hooked. Because a movie is a one-off experience, I think everyone is afraid to turn people off for a second, whereas TV isn\u2019t afraid to push you away for a little bit since you\u2019re invested.<\/p>\n

\t\tNow that you\u2019ve made \u201cThe Last Photograph,\u201d are there other films you\u2019re still dying to make? Do you still want to make a \u201cRick and Morty\u201d movie?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI do want to make a \u201cRick and Morty\u201d movie. It would be fun. For the longest time, I\u2019ve been trying to make \u201cThe Fountainhead\u201d into a movie or into TV show because it\u2019s too long. I\u2019ve written it.<\/p>\n

\t\tThat\u2019s not going to help with the right-wing allegations.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tI was going to say! That\u2019s not going to help. But it\u2019s an undeniably great book. What people don\u2019t realize is that \u201cThe Fountainhead\u201d in the 1950s was like \u201cHarry Potter\u201d now in terms of popularity. It was off the charts. Even just the why of that is worth it. And \u201cThe Fountainhead\u201d is an insane melodrama. That\u2019ll probably be my magnum opus. I\u2019ll probably die on that one. And \u201cEscape From New York\u201d is what we\u2019re working on right now.<\/p>\n

\t\tI love your \u201cDawn of the Dead.\u201d Why haven\u2019t you done another horror movie?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tRight now, I\u2019m reading a comic book called \u201cDead Samurai,\u201d about a zombie apocalypse in feudal Japan. It\u2019s kind of like \u201cThe Road\u201d and \u201cLone Wolf and Cub,\u201d where a disgraced samurai has to take this young girl across this zombie war-torn feudal Japan and get her to this Buddhist temple that is somehow protected from zombies. It really is awesome. I read it and thought, \u201cThis is a no-brainer.\u201d It has everything. You could imagine beautiful, snow-covered feudal Japanese forests with these bleeding zombies coming for this \u201cThrone of Blood\u201d samurai with arrows in his back. That\u2019s something we\u2019ve been getting our teeth into a little bit.<\/p>\n

\t\tHow did your Christian Science upbringing inform your superhero films? Because you do depict your superheroes as gods.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s this alchemy of Christian Science and Joseph Campbell \u2014 however you want to mix those together. Christian Science, in the end, is metaphysics. It\u2019s probably closer to Buddhism than Western Christianity or Catholicism. It\u2019s about the miraculous. The one thing about Christian Science is, it\u2019s very much about: The works that I can do, you can do too. I\u2019m the son of God but so are you. It\u2019s very much, like, Jesus is just a dude who figured it out. That influence on Superman is that we\u2019re him \u2014 in \u201cMan of Steel,\u201d especially. Yes, he\u2019s godlike, but he still faces the exact same problems that we face. In the end, he loves his mother and wants to find love with Lois and have a job and be a person. Even though I do glorify the version of Superman at its best, I also try at the same time to put you in that position because I believe that we all are Supermen and we all are gods on Earth. I think that\u2019s probably the influence in some ways.<\/p>\n

\t\tYou said once that the only way you\u2019d do another superhero movie is if you could do an adaptation of Frank Miller\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight Returns.\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThe reason why it\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight Returns,\u201d if anyone would ever let me do it outside of the DC Universe since it\u2019s a novel that just happens to have superheroes in it, is if I could do \u201cWatchmen\u201d and \u201cDark Knight Returns,\u201d those two books next to each other, to me, represent the complete cycle of the superhero comic book medium. You can do no more than those two books. \u201cWatchmen\u201d came at the beginning of the superhero movie phase, so it would be super fitting to have \u201cThe Dark Knight Returns\u201d come now, at what I would say is possibly \u2014 I don\u2019t want to call it the twilight, but we\u2019re down the road of the superhero movie genre, and I think audiences would understand the why of it. Let\u2019s not forget: \u201cThe Dark Knight Returns\u201d was written for a comic book audience that was very exhausted by comic books in the same way that \u201cWatchmen\u201d was, so having that movie written now for people who are exhausted by comic book movies would be a good time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s a strange time to interview Zack Snyder.
