What\u2019s expected to be Canada\u2019s biggest hospital won\u2019t open to patients for another eight years in Mississauga, but an important traffic feature built to serve the new health-care centre will start taking cars next week.<\/p>\n
Hospital officials said this week a new roundabout is set to open at the Bronte College Court entrance to Mississauga Hospital, on the west side of Hurontario Street just south of The Queensway.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce open, it will provide two-way vehicle access from Bronte College Court to all hospital entrances and the parking garage,\u201d Trillium Health Partners said in its latest online newsletter, adding the roundabout \u201cis designed to meet the needs of the future hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trillium Health Partners is the organization that oversees Mississauga\u2019s two hospitals (Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals) in addition to Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke, just steps east of Mississauga.<\/p>\n

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, a $13.9-billion \u201cstate-of-the-art\u201d health-care centre that will rise up 22 storeys on the same site as the current Mississauga Hospital, will check in at 2.8 million sq. ft. in size when it opens in 2034.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s roughly three times the size of the current hospital, which first opened at the southwest corner of Hurontario Street and The Queensway West in 1958, and will make it the largest hospital in Canada, officials have said.<\/p>\n
The new hospital will also house within it the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children,<\/a> to be the first such medical facility in Ontario.<\/p>\n Construction began on The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital in June 2025<\/a> and this past June the first concrete was poured<\/a>.<\/p>\n Trillium Health Partners said this week excavation of the huge site, which was about 70 per cent completed in May, is now close to wrapping up, \u201cclearing the way for the next phase of construction.\u201d<\/p>\n Last 30 Days: 48,235 Votes<\/p>\n All Time: 1,518,387 Votes<\/p>\n 369 VOTES The last truck is shown here leaving the excavation site at Mississauga Hospital. (Photo: Trillium Health Partners)<\/p>\n When it opens to patients and the broader community in 2034, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital<\/a>\u00a0will feature, among other things, 950 patient beds (100 per cent private rooms), a new emergency department to be three times the size of the current ER and nine new and 14 enhanced state-of-the-art operating rooms, which will increase surgical capacity and reduce wait times across the region, officials noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n The City of Mississauga is contributing $390 million<\/a> to the cost of the new $13.9-billion hospital. Infrastructure Ontario is in charge of the project.<\/p>\n
