<\/p>\nMississauga\u2019s biggest community centre is being reimagined and redeveloped in the next several years to \u201cbetter meet the needs of a growing community,\u201d the city says.<\/p>\n
The 142,000-sq.-ft. Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library, which serves the city\u2019s downtown, is on the books for a major transformation that got underway with a public engagement campaign and community survey this past summer.<\/p>\n
Design work is slated to begin next year followed by a second public engagement initiative, which will include community presentations and information sessions, on the schedule for late 2027 or spring 2028, according to the City of Mississauga.<\/p>\n
Officials expect design work to be completed in summer 2029 and construction to begin soon thereafter\u00a0at a time not yet determined.<\/p>\n
\u201cMississauga\u2019s downtown area is a growing community that\u2019s expected to double in size by 2041,\u201d city officials said in an online description of the major project. \u201cTo meet the needs of the growing community, existing community spaces will be reimagined, including the redevelopment and repurposing of existing city-owned lands and facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The community centre and library, located at 1275 Mississauga Valley Blvd., is the city\u2019s largest such facility, officials note, adding it was built in 1977 and renovated in 2004.<\/p>\n
The parkland surrounding the community centre is roughly 50 acres in size and owned by the city.<\/p>\n
Mississauga officials say the city\u2019s 2024 Future Directions Plan identified Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library as \u201ca key opportunity to support future growth in the downtown area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Continuing, the municipality said, the plan proposes \u201credeveloping the site into a more urban community centre and using the site more efficiently to help meet the city\u2019s housing priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city added it is working with a consultant team to determine the amenities, size and design of the new community centre and library that will service the community and surrounding neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n
Construction costs are not yet budgeted.<\/p>\n
Currently, the community centre and library offer the following amenities:<\/p>\n
Aquatics centre (25-metre, six-lane Terry Fox Pool and Therapy Pool).
\nTerry Fox Fitness Centre and studio.
\nGymnasium.
\nIndoor arena.
\nLibrary and related programming areas.
\nLicensed spaces.
\nLobby, offices, changerooms and auxiliary spaces.
\nMultipurpose spaces.
\nSquash courts.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Mississauga Aquatic Club has submitted a petition containing dozens of signatures to the city calling for a larger swimming pool to be part of the redeveloped facility.<\/p>\n
The petition is on the city council agenda on Wednesday, when aquatic club officials are also expected to make a presentation to councillors.<\/p>\n
The club is asking for a 25-metre, 10-lane swimming pool \u2014 four lanes wider than the current pool \u2014 \u201cto serve as the home base of the Mississauga Aquatic Club and expand access to a high-quality aquatic facility for the entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n
