Danny Maciocia has spent much of his football life building winners. Now, the architect of the Montreal Alouettes has been given more time to keep building one.

Maciocia, their senior vice-president of football operations and general manager, has signed a two-year contract extension. The new deal keeps him in Montreal through the 2031 CFL season, extending a remarkable second chapter with the club. It was a 1-2 signing of the brain trust of the Alouettes as head coach Jason Maas was signed through the 2030 campaign. “We’re going to be around for a little bit longer,” Danny Maciocia said. “Jason and I, we both appreciate the fact that they (management) realize how passionate we are about this football team and the way that we collectively have been able to get it turned around. Because at the end of the day, there’s two guys that are getting extended, through 30 and 31. But this is a this is a body of work, a body of work that many different individuals contributed to, and now it’s going to be extremely important that we secure their services to moving forward, so we want to keep the foundation in place, whether it’s coaches, whether it’s administrators, or whether it’s players, and try to get on a on a run here.”

Maciocia’s path to the Alouettes’ front office started when his professional coaching career began in 1996 as a quality-control coach for Montreal following his time with the St. Leonard Cougars organization. When he finally returned to the Alouettes in 2020 as general manager, it was, in his words, the realization of a long-held dream of leading his hometown professional team.

Since returning to Montreal as general manager, Maciocia has helped establish a culture built around continuity, player development and a strong Canadian presence. The Alouettes have not missed the playoffs during his tenure, and in 2023 they captured the franchise’s eighth Grey Cup, defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24.

The success has continued. Montreal reached the Grey Cup again in 2025, and the 2026 Alouettes have clinched a home field playoff spot. Overall, the Maciocia-Jason Maas partnership has produced a 42-22-1 regular-season record. “When I think about it now,” Maciocia said. “We’re going to be entering 2027, and I’ve known him for 25 years. That’s almost like half his life because he’s 50 years old, and it all started in 2002 in Edmonton when I was coaching him and he was playing quarterback for us.”

Under his watch, Montreal has drafted and developed a number of Canadian players who have become important contributors, including Geoffrey Cantin-Arku, David Dallaire, Marc-Antoine Dequoy, Pier-Olivier Lestage, Tyson Philpot, Tyrell Richards and Lwal Uguak. “there’s no question. I take a lot of pride in that,” he said. “Trying to get the best possible Canadian content on board here is a criteria for us. There’s also a sense of accomplishment when you do it, not only at the at the player level, but even at the coaching level, even at the administration level. We’ve been able to affect change, and also at the same time, we’ve been able to empower people in our own backyard, it doesn’t show up in the win column, but there’s definitely huge wins for us.”

When the day does come that Maciocia steps away, “I think it was a dear friend of my dad that told me, you get to an age where you start working on your legacy,” he said. “I think this is going to be part of our legacy is the fact that the impact and the influence that we were able to have, we’re definitely going to leave it (the Alouettes) in a better state than we found it. I’m a firm believer in that.” n

Danny Maciocia has spent much of his football life building winners.
