The days, weeks, and months after a brutal knockout leave the defeated fighter searching for answers. Depending on where they are in their career, the boxer may be left looking for either answers or a way out of the sport.

In all honesty, many fighters never mentally recover from losses because of the scope, the embarrassment, or the knowledge that the sport’s last picture was of them struggling to stand with a referee standing over them. For Conor Benn, he now knows the exact same place well.

Benn dropped significant weight to fight Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight crown. After months of back-and-forth, the combatants first engaged in a war of words. During that time, other boxers and members of the media all chimed in before the opening bell. Yet, that pales in comparison to the deluge of harsh words aimed at Benn. However, the 29-year-old decided to speak as subtly as possible.

Benn’s brutal defeat had many questioning his future

The promotion and hype surrounding the September 12 fight with Garcia was massive. Benn cut 33 pounds to weigh in under the 147-pound limit, which he promptly regained through hydration after the official weigh-in.

Although the British boxer looked like the more aggressive fighter, the fact that he could not do enough damage became telling. In the second round, Garcia held his stance, baiting Benn into walking into a right hand that effectively ended the fight.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn is no stranger to being outspoken, and he shared some of his most vicious assessments of Benn following his fight.

“Conor Benn will be done in the next year or so. He may have one more fight; who knows, he may not even fight again because he has made his money. I think he wants his money—he is not going to beat anyone of significance at 160 lbs. So, what are you in the game for? What Conor Benn is in the game for is to make his money.”

At 29 years old, one of boxing’s biggest promoters basically called an end on Benn’s career.

Conor Benn sends clear message to doubters

After days of probable self-reflection and introspection, Benn made a return of sorts. In an Instagram video shared on his channel, he said the following.

“School’s never out. Straight to work. Yeah, boy.”

While running on a treadmill, Benn silenced anyone who thought that he would silently slink into oblivion. Who he faces next remains to be seen, but Benn seems prepared to compete. If he can get back into the ring and put the loss behind him, it would make for a memorable comeback.
