It’s a bird, a plane, a Hope-Lotus HBT: Canyon’s prototype time trial bike brings extended wide-stance fork legs back to the road, but are they faster?<\/p>\n

The current Canyon Speedmax time trial bike was released back in 2021. At the time, it came amidst a swathe of new TT bikes, but it never had that air of an absolute rocket ship. In fact, I wrote at the time that the UCI was losing time-trialling to triathlon, given how fast bikes like the triathlon version of the Speedmax seemed compared to their UCI-legal siblings. <\/p>\n

But that release came less than a year on from the UCI relaxing its frame design rules, and so Canyon likely didn\u2019t have enough time to fully implement the extra freedom said rule change provided. As such, it wasn\u2019t long before the Speedmax started looking a little off the pace, not just to its own triathlon sibling, but to some of the wilder UCI-legal designs that emerged shortly after.\u200b<\/p>\n

As such, when Canyon released a new Speedmax triathlon bike back in July, many were left wondering \u2026 where is the UCI-legal version? As much as it looked similar at first glance, the new tri bike was less a conventional frame redesign than a wholesale rethink of the rider-bike system integration and drag reduction. <\/p>\n

Canyon called its new approach \u201cAeroID,\u201d combining the \u201cAeroShield\u201d cockpit, integrated \u201cAeroFuel\u201d storage, a vastly expanded \u201cAeroFit\u201d adjustment range and a new \u201cAeroBase\u201d frame. The frame itself retained the previous Speedmax\u2019s aerodynamic foundations, which is why it looked so similar, but Canyon built in a so-called \u201cprogressive geometry\u201d aimed at offering more positional adjustability to reduce rider drag, which accounts for the vast majority of total system drag, and to make the bike more stable at speed.\u200b<\/p>\n

But for anyone wondering where the UCI-legal version was, they didn’t have to wait long. It popped up under Spanish national team riders in Montreal for next week’s World Road Championships, and the quick images and details, nabbed from a few Instagram posts<\/a> from the Spanish federation, offer a number of interesting features to explore.<\/p>\n

A different front end from the tri Speedmax<\/p>\n

The most striking and eye-catching element of the new bike is the Hope-Lotus HBT-esque front end, with extra-wide-stance fork legs that extend through the fork crown all the way to the base-bar handlebar. That front end is different than the one found on the triathlon version and creates a trident-like structure with the two fork legs running alongside the head tube above the fork crown, while below it the wide-stance fork legs open up a considerable gap to the front wheel. \u200b<\/p>\n
