"Surrey

Surrey residents now have a designated, safe, and respectful location along the Fraser River to perform memorial ash scattering ceremonies for their loved ones. The City of Surrey has introduced an online reservation system for a new pilot project situated at the Surrey Public Wharf, offering local families a peaceful waterfront space to carry out meaningful faith and cultural traditions.

For many communities across the Lower Mainland particularly within South Asian and diverse faith traditions releasing the ashes of a departed family member into flowing water holds deep spiritual significance.

Mayor Brenda Locke highlighted that the initiative directly addresses long-standing community needs by balancing cultural inclusion with public safety and environmental protection.

The project traces back to 2024, when City Council directed municipal staff to locate a suitable riverfront site. Following technical evaluations, community feedback, and environmental assessments, the Surrey Public Wharf was chosen for the initiative, with funding secured in the 2025 capital budget.

City officials confirmed that environmental reviews verified the site’s safety, while dialogue with local Indigenous communities remains ongoing.

To ensure the space remains organized and accessible for both ceremonial participants and everyday park visitors, the city is implementing an advance booking system. Starting September 21, families wishing to host an ash scattering ceremony can reserve a dedicated date and time slot through the official City of Surrey website. Municipal staff will use feedback gathered throughout the pilot phase to evaluate the site and inform potential future upgrades.

Surrey residents now have a designated, safe, and respectful location along the Fraser River to perform memorial ash…

[194299
49,48,87674
post-900580","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-surrey","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-surrey
["GET
