Mississauga sisters took a top prize at the Canadian National Exhibition\u2019s Rising Star Talent Competition.<\/p>\n

Teenage vocalist siblings Catherine and Chloe Tiongson competed against 84 contestants in their age group and won the Youth Grand Champions title during the final weekend of Canada\u2019s largest fair, the CNE said.<\/p>\n

While the pair have entered the competition before, this was the first time Chloe, 16, and Catherine, 13, have combined their talents in a duet.<\/p>\n

The pair chose the song And I Am Telling You\u00a0by Henry Krieger and Tom Even, made famous by Jennifer Hudson in the film Dream Girls and Amber Riley in the first episode<\/a> of the TV show Glee.<\/p>\n

The song is strong and powerful, said Catherine. Normally a solo song, they chose to sing it together, and the blending and chemistry on stage came\u00a0naturally, said Chloe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think\u00a0our voices complement each other,\u201d said Catherine.<\/p>\n

When they got on stage,<\/a> nerves almost got the better of Chloe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was actually pretty nervous,\u201d Chloe told INsauga.com. \u201cI don\u2019t know why. It was just like, I had like a really big\u00a0heartbeat in my chest.\u201d<\/p>\n

The anxiousness subsided in the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I found out that my sister and I won, I felt\u00a0a great sense of\u00a0accomplishment because we\u2019d put a lot of work towards that, and the hard work paid off,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0felt really happy when I heard that we won,\u201d Catharine added.<\/p>\n

Chloe, who attends Grade 11 at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School, and Catherine, who is in Grade 8 at St. Giovanni Scalabrini Catholic Elementary School, both started singing as young children. Their mother is also a strong singer, they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I started singing when I was like three or four,\u201d said Chloe. \u201cI\u00a0would just pick up what I heard,\u00a0like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, like\u00a0the lullabies. But I think I started\u00a0learning technique and taking it\u00a0somewhat seriously around the age of seven.\u201d<\/p>\n

Catherine followed her sister\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would always hear\u00a0my sister\u2019s TV shows or just random things on the TV, and then I would pick it up and just sing\u00a0at random times,\u201d she said. \u201cI would\u00a0sing to my mom. I would\u00a0go up to her and then start singing random Disney songs when I was like four or five.\u201d<\/p>\n

She started voice lessons around five or six years old.<\/p>\n

Both studied at the JDL School of Performing Arts, which helped them gain confidence, their father, Gil Tiongson, said.<\/p>\n

They now post singing videos<\/a> regularly to social media. Some of Chloe\u2019s TikTok videos have over one million likes.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sisters prepared for months with their vocal coach, Alisa Grace Datu, for the CNE competition.<\/p>\n

Tiongson said he encouraged his daughters to consider a duo rather than entering the competition with solo performances.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them it is better if you\u00a0sing together, and I think you will be more powerful, and it happened,\u201d said Tiongson. \u201cI\u2019m very, very proud of them. I\u2019m so lucky that I have these two talented daughters.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the future, both sisters would love to pursue careers as singers or study science. For now, they hope to enter more competitions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to represent Mississauga on bigger stages, if given any opportunities, and just broaden our audience,\u201d Chloe said.<\/p>\n

The CNE competition has a legacy of nurturing provincial talent, with past winners including jazz sensation Matt Dusk and award-winning choreographer Blake McGrath.<\/p>\n

In addition to winning a $3,000 prize, the Tiongson sisters will be invited to participate in next year\u2019s CNE at various events including the singing of the national anthem at the opening ceremonies.<\/p>\n
