Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills kicked off Week 2 in the NFL with another spectacular performance on offence.<\/p>\n

Allen had five touchdowns total and the Bills beat the Detroit Lions 41-31<\/a> on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

After the league tied a record for points in an opening week \u2013 an average of 49.4 per game \u2013 the Bills and Lions put up 72.<\/p>\n

Why are scores soaring?<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t [explain it] because typically it\u2019s like the other way \u2013 offences are trying to get going and defences can be ahead,\u201d Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI watched some around-the-league stuff, and it felt like guys just were making plays. There [were] a ton of plays being made after the catch, but you bring it up \u2013 defences are so limited with what they can do based on the rules [before] you get to live tackling, and it\u2019s a different ballgame.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poor tackling contributes to more scoring. Tackling is poor because teams don\u2019t practice it as often.<\/p>\n

Contact is prohibited throughout off-season workouts per the NFL\u2019s collective bargaining agreement with the players\u2019 union.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a five-day acclimation period at the beginning of training camp. Teams are limited to 16 padded practice days during training camp, down from 28 under the previous CBA. Even during padded practices, there isn\u2019t live tackling every play. Teams can\u2019t have more than three consecutive days of padded practices during three of the five camp weeks and no more than two consecutive days during the other two weeks.<\/p>\n

Long gone are the days when teams used to hold two-a-day full-contact practices in camp. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t bring players to the ground. I mean, we\u2019re pros at the end of the day. But we\u2019ve all played football before. We all should be able to know how to tackle,\u201d Texans all-pro edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. said.<\/p>\n

Houston\u2019s defence, which was No. 1 last year in fewest yards allowed, was shredded by Allen and the Bills last week. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat was like a little get our feet wet type of game. Get back acclimated to everything,\u201d Anderson said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t play in preseason. So, for us, all 11 playing again since January, that was like [an] \u2018OK, let\u2019s get going\u2019 type of game and just seeing where we are as a team. We just have to do a better job. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s an excuse. We do a lot of tackling circuits. We do a lot of drills. Coaches put us in a lot of positions to be able to get guys down on the ground and finish the right way. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s really no excuse. It doesn\u2019t matter if you didn\u2019t play in preseason or not. When the ball is snapped and you\u2019re in front of the TV and you\u2019re a professional football player, you have to go out there and perform the way you need to perform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denver, which allowed the third-fewest points in 2025, couldn\u2019t stop Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City in a 31-10 loss on Monday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it just all goes in toward effort,\u201d Broncos two-time all-pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II said. \u201cTackling is one of those things where you have to be intentional with it. You have to bring pads, feet and you have to wrap your arms. I just feel like we were assuming that the ball carrier was going to go down at the moment rather than finishing at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Texans have another tough challenge this week facing Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Coach DeMeco Ryans won\u2019t stand for another terrible effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe expectation for us defensively is for everybody to improve. Last Sunday wasn\u2019t good enough, not from any one position,\u201d Ryans said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe play collectively as a defence and when we play together and everybody\u2019s doing their job, being where they\u2019re supposed to be, doing what they\u2019re supposed to do, we play really good defensive football. Not just edge rushers, linebackers, defensive tackles, corners, everybody has to pick their game up and we have to play better.\u201d<\/p>\n

With so many teams holding players out of preseason games, joint practices have become the best way to get ready for the regular season. Still, it\u2019s a controlled environment, quarterbacks aren\u2019t getting hit and nobody wants to risk injury.<\/p>\n

The first couple weeks of the season are an extension of training camp. Players on offence and defence are still acclimating to the physical nature of the game.<\/p>\n

It used to be an advantage for the defence because offences didn\u2019t get enough reps to get in sync. Seventeen games in, it\u2019s the other way around.<\/p>\n

Of course, Allen and the Bills and Jared Goff and the Lions run two of the league\u2019s most dynamic offences.
