A landmark memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the Province and the City of Surrey on Friday.

While Surrey has been locked in as the host city, the final official name of the museum and the precise location of the building will be determined through upcoming community consultations and site reviews.

The new agreement sets a structured framework for the Province and the municipality to collaborate on the next phase of development. This includes active planning activities, comprehensive implementation strategies, and continued public engagement to ensure the institution authentically reflects the diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of South Asian Canadians throughout British Columbia.

“Canadians of South Asian heritages have made extraordinary contributions to British Columbia’s social, cultural, economic and political development for generations,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “This agreement is an important step toward creating a place where people can learn about, celebrate and connect with these stories for years to come.”

With nearly 40% of Surrey’s population identifying with South Asian heritages, local leadership welcomed the milestone. “There is no better place than Surrey for a museum dedicated to Canadians of South Asian heritages,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “These communities have deep and significant stories that deserve to be preserved, celebrated and shared. We look forward to listening to community members, learning from their perspectives and working together to create a space that honours the stories, contributions and experiences of South Asian Canadians for generations to come.”

The upcoming phase of work will focus heavily on evaluating potential sites and spaces across the city, exploring support mechanisms, and engaging directly with community stakeholders. Supporters emphasize that community voices will remain central to shaping the institution.

“Cultural identity is foundational to well-being, and when communities see their stories honoured, it strengthens belonging, resilience and mental health,” said Balbir Gurm, former co-chair of the minister’s advisory committee and a Surrey resident. “Surrey is home to vibrant, multigenerational communities whose stories and contributions have helped shape British Columbia. Having led the Punjabi and South Asian Legacy Projects, I know this institution will transform community health and pride.”

Parteek Singh Mahal British Columbia’s planned provincial museum dedicated to celebrating South Asian Canadians will officially be built…

[194299
49,48,87674
post-901205","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-surrey","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-surrey
["GET
