<\/p>\n (VERSION FRAN\u00c7AISE SUIT)<\/p>\n MONTREAL \u2014 Rookie midfielder Nicholas Minchillo<\/a> scored twice and added an assist as the McGill Redbirds exploded for four first-half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over the visiting UQAM Citadins in RSEQ men’s soccer action Friday at Percival Molson Stadium.<\/p>\n The 5-foot-6, 139-pound spark plug from Laval, Que., was seemingly everywhere as McGill produced its highest offensive output in regular-season play since a 5-0 home-field victory over Concordia on Oct. 5, 2024. Prior to that, the Redbirds hadn’t scored five goals in a regular-season contest since 2016.<\/p>\n The victory evened McGill’s record at 2-2-0, while UQAM also moved to 2-2-0. The Redbirds led 4-0 at halftime and added their fifth less than two minutes after the restart. <\/p>\n McGill needed just 3:29 to open the scoring. Spencer Neil<\/a> registered his first goal of the season on a play set up by Maher Fares<\/a> and Minchillo. Just 69 seconds later, Minchillo found the net himself to give the Redbirds a 2-0 advantage before the five-minute mark. <\/p>\n Minchillo’s breakout performance came after McGill earned its first victory of the season a week earlier, a 1-0 road decision over Laval.<\/p>\n “He was good, but he was lacking a little bit of confidence,” said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot<\/a>. “Tonight, you could see that the game they won last weekend at Laval was a key factor. A lot of them showed confidence, and when you have confidence and talent, you can do great things.”<\/p>\n The onslaught continued in the 15th minute when defender Yacine Ihaddadene<\/a> scored to make it 3-0. Nathan Yee<\/a> nearly added another four minutes later but struck the crossbar. <\/p>\n UQAM had a chance to cut into the deficit in the 29th minute when Jarode Nichele hit the crossbar, but Minchillo struck again in the 37th. The 20-year-old physical education freshman finished a setup from defender Renaud Fleury<\/a> for his second goal of the night, sending McGill into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead. <\/p>\n McGill picked up where it left off after the break. Substitute Lefika Noko<\/a> scored just 1:47 into the second half to make it 5-0. <\/p>\n The youth movement was evident throughout the McGill lineup. Mounicot started six first-year players and said the development of a highly regarded recruiting class was beginning to show.<\/p>\n “We knew our recruiting class was very strong,” he said. “But we also knew the team wouldn’t be ready before the third week of play. In the last two weekends, we’ve won, so we have to make sure that in two days from now at Sherbrooke, we perform just as well.”<\/p>\n With the outcome well in hand, Mounicot made extensive use of his bench. Minchillo’s night ended in the 58th minute after he had figured officially in three goals with two markers and an assist. He finished with three attempted shots, including two on target. <\/p>\n Goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola<\/a>, a fifth-year senior from Montreal, took care of matters at the other end, stopping all three shots directed his way for the clean sheet. He denied Younesse Elmehd Chibane in the 20th minute and Dohryen Rinaldi Demas in the 34th before turning aside Noah Le Curieux-Lafayette in the second half. <\/p>\n It marked Ciociola’s second consecutive shutout after his four-save performance in the victory at Laval. The Redbirds have now outscored their opponents 6-0 over their two-game winning streak, after being outscored 5-0 over the first two games to start the season.<\/p>\n McGill held a 13-10 advantage in attempted shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The Redbirds also generated four corner kicks to UQAM’s one, while Citadins goalkeeper Antoine Lalibert\u00e9 made two saves. <\/p>\n The teams split the game’s two yellow cards, with Jordan Therrien cautioned for UQAM and Gabriel Nguyen<\/a> for McGill.\u00a0<\/p>\n Mounicot was encouraged by the way his young squad has come together.<\/p>\n “The group is gelling very well and my staff is doing an amazing job,” he said. “It’s a good bunch. Obviously, when you win, things are always better, but you could see from the start that it’s a special group.”<\/p>\n McGill returns to action Sunday when the young Redbirds travel to Sherbrooke for a 1 p.m. kickoff. C’est un bon groupe. \u00c9videmment, tout va toujours mieux quand on gagne, mais on pouvait voir d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part qu’il s’agissait d’un groupe sp\u00e9cial. \u00bb<\/p>\n McGill reprendra l’action dimanche lorsque les jeunes Redbirds rendront visite au Vert & Or de Sherbrooke \u00e0 13 h.
